Barrs at European Champs

What a wonderful week for Jessie and Thomas Barr in Helsinki. Jessie made the final of the 400m hurdles and finished in 8th position after a fantastic lifetime best of 55.93 in the semi finals. Well done Jess! A great senior debut for Thomas also making the semi finals where he ran a fine 50.22. Brilliant running for both. Ye made us all so proud!

Viking Marathon

What a wonderful occasion the first ever Waterford Viking Marathon was! Well done to everyone who helped make it the event it was and to all who participated. Well done especially to Derek McManus, Derry Kiely, John Whelan and Shem Cooper who among so many others completed the elusive distance with distinction! A huge well done also to our 400m hurdler turned marathon runner Alan Corcoran who completed the Mission Impossible 35 marathons in 35 days!!

Barr's compete at European Championships

Starting this Wednesday the European Championships are in Helsinki and
sister and brother Jessie and Thomas Barr Ferrybank AC both compete
for Ireland in 400 Metres Hurdle races. Both will be in action on
Wednesday morning in heats of their events  Thomas at 8.50 am and
Jessie at 12.30 pm. If they progress the semi finals are on Thursday
and the finals are on Saturday. With both chasing ( A ) standard times
for Olympic Qualification the competition in Helsinki may be just what
they need to achieve their goals. We wish them well on a very historic
day for the Barr family in such a major event

Jessie second in Belgium

In Nivelle in Belgium on Saturday last Jessie Barr finished second in
a 400 Metres graded race in 53.70 seconds a personal best for her, the
race was won by Marian Heffernan another Irish athlete in 53,19

Lots of winners in Tullamore at All Irelands

On  Sunday last at the All Ireland Junior and u 23 Championships in
Tullamore athletes from Ferrybank AC and West Waterford AC had great
results. For Ferrybank there were six winners and these were Thomas
Barr 400 Metres Hurdles, Billy Ryan 800 Metres, Cara Kennedy Hammer,
Niamh Whelan 100 Metres all under 23. Junior Winners were Ben Kiely
400 Metres Hurdles and Sean Archer Triple Jump and silver medal
winners were Niamh Whelan 200 metres, Ciara Cronin 800 Metres both u
23 and Sorcha Murphy Junior High Jump. West Waterford winners were
Thomas Houlihan u 23 Pole Vault and Junior Kate Veale 3 Km Walk and
Lisa Houlihan Pole Vault and Clare Collins was second in the Junior
High Jump.

Tailteann Schools  Inter Provincial

Several athletes from Waterford Schools competed  on the Munster team
at the Tailteann Schools Inter Provincial in Santry on Saturday last
and Aisling Quinn Ursuline was second in the 1500 metres and Megan
O'Connor St Augustine's was third in the Pole Vault

All Ireland Juvenile Team wins

Cork IT track was the venue on Saturday last for the All Ireland under
9 to 11 team championships and Relays and athletes from Ferrybank and
Waterford AC had very good results. For Ferrybank the girls under 10
relay team won the squad was Rachel Walsh, Aoife Keena, Praise Owoeye
and Paula Igwe.  Rachel Walsh and Praise Owoeye won the 500 Metres
team race u 11 and were also third in the Long Jump team event and
silver medals went to Kevwe Ojoh and Ejiro Ojoh in the team 60 metres
u 11. For Waterford AC the boys relay team won the team being Jack
Deegan,Victor Eddy, Dylan Rowe and Evan Hayes. Silver medals in the 60
Metres team races were won by Jack Corcoran and Fortune Eddy u 9 and
Evan Hayes and Victor Eddy u 10

Community Games at RSC

 Eleven Communities from all  over the County participated in the
County Community Games Athletic finals at the RSC on Sunday last and
the award for best overall community went to Tramore, the award for
best turned out Community went to An Sean Phobal The Games pledges
were read in English by Denise O'Connor Tramore and in Irish by Aoife

Shane Quinn wins Dromana 5 Miles

One hundred and forty competed in the Annual "Dungarvan Leader"
Dromana 5 miles Road race from Villierstow to Cappoquin on Friday last
and Shane Quinn Ferrybank AC was the easy winner in 24 minutes 27
seconds, Zintars Klava West Waterford was second in 26.42 and Frank
Quinlan Waterford was third in 26.50. Angela McCann Clonmel was first
lady home in 30.18, Corina Walsh West Waterford was second in 32.40
and Theresa Cunningham Carrick on Suir was third in 34.11. The event
was race 7 of the Ger Wyley Sports Summer series

WLRFM Waterford Viking Marathon on Saturday

The first ever Marathon Race to be staged in Waterford will take place
on Saturday next and it has an entry of 1800, entries closed on Friday
June 15th many will run the full Marathon, others will do a Half
Marathon and there will be  more in the relays. Only those  registered
wearing their official numbers will be allowed compete as they are the
only ones covered by the Race Insurance and  no entries taken on the
day or indeed at any time after closing date. The Full Marathon and
Team Relay will start on The Mall, Waterford City at 9am. The
wheelchair marathon will set out at 8.50am.We advise all participants
to be there in plenty of time.For safety and comfort, walkers in
particular are advised to start towards the back of the field Full
details of the Event re Half Marathon etc are on the Waterford Viking
Marathon Website. Runners are advised  to run no more than three
abreast on roads where there are cats eyes as they can prove a hazard
if the view is restricted for those coming behind.The race finishes
inside the RSC

Munster Juvenile

Cork IT Track is the venue on Saturday and Sunday next for the Munster
u 14 to 19 Track and Field championships and there will be a large
entry from Waterford Clubs. It will be two long day's of competition
and the starting times are 11 am both days and full programme details
are on Munster Athletics Website On Saturday and Sunday July 7th and
8th the All Ireland Senior Championships are in Santry

Road Race in  Carrick on Suir

Race 2 in the Oatfield Sports Series will be the the annual Carraig
Hotel Hotel Deadman's 5 Mile race and it  takes place on this Friday
29th June at 7.30pm in Carrick on Suir. Registration takes place from
6 pm at the Swan Juvenile Centre which is adjacent to the Town Park in
Carrick. Other road races coming up are Glaxo Smithkline 5 Miles in
Dungarvan on Friday July 6 th at 8 pm and the Autopower 5 miles in
Rathgormack on Friday July 13 th at 7. 30 pm race 3 Oatfield Sports

National Jun & u 23 results

A brilliant day at the national Junior & u 23 Championships in Tullamore today saw our athletes return with six gold and three silver medals! Ben Kiely ( junior 400m hurdles ) , Thomas Barr (u23 400m hurdles), Niamh Whelan (u23 100m), Billy Ryan ( u 23 800m), Cara kennedy ( u 23 hammer) and Sean Archer (junior triple jump) all won National titles. There was silver medals for Ciara Cronin ( u 23 800m), Niamh Whelan ( u 23 200m ) and Sorcha Murphy ( junior high jump). We

Jessie runs a pb in Nivelles

A fine run from Jessie barr in Nivelles, Belgium today. She was second in the 400m in a personal best time of 53.7. This places Jessie well up on the Irish ranking list for the year and hopefully will be enough to see her one of the starting four of the 4 x 400m relay team at the European Championships in Helsinki next week. Jessie will also compete in her speciality event the 400m hurdles in Helsinki. Well done Jessie and best of luck at the Europeans!

National Team Championships u 10 & 11

Fantastic results in the CIT at the National u 10 & 11 team Championships today! Our under 10 girls relay of Paula Igwe, Praise Owoeye, Rachel Walsh, Aoife keena and Sandra Teniola won gold medals! Well done girls! Gold medals also for our 500m team under ten of Rachel & Praise and they also won bronze in the long jump. Kevwe and Ejiro Ojoh won silver medals in the girls u 11 60m. Paula and Sandra were just outside the medals in the 60m under 10 as were Grace and Ejiro in the long jump under 11. Fantastic results from everyone today. A huge well done to these young athletes!!!

Three Medals won in England

 Four Ferrybank AC athletes competed at the British u 20 and u 23
Championships in Bedford last week end and they did very well coming
home with two silver and one bronze medal. Ben Kiely having won his
heat in the 400 metres Hurdles on Saturday was second in the final on
Sunday in a fine time of 53.31 seconds and this should secure him a
place on the Irish team for the World Junior Championships in
Barcelona next month. Niamh Whelan had her best performances this
season over the two days. On Sunday she finished second in the 200
metres final u 23 in 24.11 seconds and on Saturday she was sixth in
the 100 metres final in 11.96 against a strong wind, Cara Kennedy was
third in the u 23 hammer with a throw of 54.78. metres and Sorcha
Murphy was 5th in the High Jump u 20 with 1.67 Metres a season's best

Munster titles won

In Templemore on Sunday last athletes from Waterford were in top form
at the Munster Senior and Masters Championships. At senior level
Ferrybank AC had wins with Kelly Proper in the Long Jump, Keith Smith
Javelin and Sean Archer Triple Jump, Smith was also second in the Long
Jump, Kate Hickey won the Discus, Clare Collins was second in the High
Jump and Lisa Houlihan third in the Hurdles for West Waterford and
Siobhan Heylin Waterford Ac was second in the 1500 metres.In the
Masters Waterford Athletic Club and West Waterford both had brilliant
days with several wins.The Waterford AC winners  were ; Women o 35
Jacinta Power Discus, Suzanne Dullaghan 100 and 200 metres, o 40
Deirdre Chapman Javelin,o 45 Elaine Barry 200 and 400 Metres,  o 45
Gabriel Blair 800 metres, o50 Paula Kavanagh 100 Metres and 200
metres. The women's team won the 4x 100 m Relay with Jacinta Power
Elaine Barry, Gabriel Blair and  Suzanne Dullaghan The men's winners
were o 35  Brendan Leahy 100 and 200 Metres, o 40 Kieran Leahy 100 and
200 Metres, o45 Tom O.Brien 400 Metres, High Jump and Long Jump,
Malachy Mc Glynn 1500 Metres, the men also won the 4 x 100 Metres
Relay with Brendan and Kieran Leahy Paschal Halley and Michael Coleman
For West Waterford the winners were; 0 35 Des Feeney 800 Metres, o 45

Harty wins in Ring

Eighty competed in the Annual Mooney's Bar 6 Miles Ras Na Rinne in
Ring on Friday last and Philip Harty from Ballinamult who runs with
Donore Harriers and presently in fine form won in a time of 31 minutes
28 seconds, Ravis Zakis, West Waterford AC was second in 32.13 and
Shane Mullaney, Thurles Crokes third in 32.23 Angela McCann, Clonmel
won the ladies section in 37.33, Racquel Valadez, Pikes Peak Road
Runners, Colorado was second in 41.09 and Theresa Cunningham Carrick
on Suir was third in 41.11. The different age group winners were as
follows. Men : over 40 Peter Duggan, St Joseph's, o45 Dan Kelleher,
Midleton,o50 Gerry Cantwell, West Waterford, o 55 Colin Lyons, do,
Junior Damien Murphy, do. Ladies o 35 Karen Ryan, West Waterford, o 40

Barr's selected

Thomas and Jessie Barr have both been selected on the Irish Team for
the European Championship in Helsinki later this month both in 400
Metres Hurdles races, this will be the biggest stage yet for both who
are still seeking ( A )Standard's for the Olympics.

All Ireland Junior and u 23 Championships

The first big National fixture of the season is in Tullamore on Sunday
next June 24 th. Its the all Ireland Junior and u 23 Championships and
many athletes from Waterford will be in action.Time is now running out
for athletes chasing qualifying times for the World junior
Championships and many will be hoping they can get the standard on
Sunday. The programme begins at 10.30 am with the men's Hammer and
first race on the track is at 11. 45 pm the women's 400 Metres
hurdles.

Tailteann Schools Inter provincial

Santry is the venue on Saturday next for the Tailteann Schools Inter
provincial and several athletes from Waterford Schools are on the
Munster selection.

Waterford Community Games Finals on Sunday

On Sunday next the Annual Waterford Community Games Athletic Finals
are at the RSC at 11 am. Several Communities from all over the County
will compete and the parade will begin at 11 am sharp and all  those
participating are asked to be at the venue in good time

All Ireland Juvenile Championships

On Saturday next the All Ireland Lower Age Team Championships under
9,10 and 11 are at Cork IT Track and there will be competitors from
Waterford clubs

5 Miles Fun Run/ Walk on Sunday

Above will take place next Sunday June 24 th at 12 noon from "The Park
Inn Pub", Paddy Browne's Road, Waterford in aid of Crumlin's Children
's Hospital and Naomh Pol GAA Club. Entries from 10.45 am at the venue

Our end of season sports day and trip will take place on Thursday June 28th starting at the RSC at 4pm. Schedule - Sports 4-5pm. Bus to Tramore departs 5pm. Pirates Adventure Centre 5.15 - 7.15pm, Return to RSC 7.30pm. Cost €10 . Places must be booked by Wednesday June 27th. Open to all registered primary school athletes in the club.

3as u 20 & 23

Excellent results from the 3as in Bedford. Ben Kiely took silver in the u20 400m hurdles in a fine time of 54.31 , a world junior q time! Niamh Whelan was second in the u 23 200m in 24.11 and cara Kennedy took bronze in the u 23 hammer in 54.87m. Sorcha Murphy was 5th in the u 20 high jump with a fine leap of 1.67m. Well done!

Jessie wins at Oslo.meeting

On Thursday last both Jessie and Thomas Barr were in action at meetings on the Continent running in 400 Metres Hurdle races. In Oslo at the Bislett Games in a graded race Jessie won in a time of 56.73 seconds while in Huelva in Spain Thomas was 7 th in 51.48 seconds in a very fast race which was won in 49.37 seconds. Both will be endeavouring to get in to races on the continent in the coming weeks to try and get ( A ) Qualifying Standards for the Olympics Jessie's target is 55.50 seconds she has the ( B ) standard and for Thomas its 49.50 seconds for the ( A )_the closing date is July 8 th.. Both will more than likely be selected for the European Championships in Helsinki at the end of June

Munster Juvenile

At Cork IT on Saturday and Sunday last at the Munster Lower Age Juvenile Championships Waterford athletes did well. For Ferrybank AC the following won medals. Gold; Girls u 10 team 500 Metres Patricia Walsh and Praise Owoeye, Girls u 10 team 60 Metres Paula Igwe and Thando Ncube, Girls u 10 Relay Paula Igwe, Rachel Walsh, Praise Oweye and Gillian Wandji, Silver Medals : Grace Kervick and Ejiro Ojoh u 11 Long Jump and Bronze medals to Rachel Walsh and Praise Owoeye Long Jump u10 and Kevwe Ojoh and Ejiro Ojoh 60 M u 11. Individual medals went to Tom Gallagher silver u12 High Jum, bronze  u 12 Ball Throw, Fiona Egboko silver 100 Metres and Shot Putt u 12, Molly Hutchinson silver u12 Long Jump, the girls u 12 Relay team were second and  Haley Smith bronze u 13 Shot Putt and Pamela Ademoye bronze u 13 High Jump . Waterford AC had three wins with Evan Hayes and Victor Eddy u 10 60 M, Ethan Flynn and Lee Mackey u11 60 M, Boys u 10 relay with Jack Corcoran, Evan Hayes, Dylan Rowe and Victor eddy,the boys u 11 team were second in the Relay with Cathal Scanlon, Lee Mackey, Victor Eddy and Ethan Flynn and Jack Corcoran and Fortune Eddy were third u 9 60 M. Thomas Ahern An Ghaeltacht was 1 st in the 600 metres u 13 and Shane Monagle Tramore 3rd in Hurdles u 13.

Munster Juv Day 2

Congratulations to all our younger age athletes on day of the Munster championships. Our under 10 girls team won the 500m, Tom Gallagher was second in the HJ, Hailey Smith was third in the shot, Fiona Egboko was second in the sot, Mollie Hutchinson was second in the LJ, the under ten girls (Praise, Rachel, Thando & Paula) and won their relay and the under 12 girls (Fiona, isobelle, Zoe and Priscilla were 2nd !

Munster Juv day 1

An amazing haul of medals in the Munster u 9-13s in Cork today. rachel & praise were third in the long jump u 10, Tom third in the ball throw u 12, Grace and Ejiro were second in the long jump under 11, Praise and Paula won the 60m u 10,Kevwe and Ejiro were third in the 60m u 11 and Fiona was third in the 80m under 12. Hopefully more great performances tomorrow! Well done to everyone who took part today!

Good time in Geneva by Thomas Barr Competing at two meetings in Switzerland last week end in 400 Metres Hurdles races Thomas Barr Ferrybank AC had a very good result in Geneva on Saturday when he finished second in his race in a time of 50.80 seconds his second best time over the distance and on Sunday in Chaux de Fonds in terrible weather conditions he was fourth in a time of 52.34 seconds . Thomas is chasing the ( A ) standard of 49.50 for the Olympics and he has until July 8 th to get it ,he tries again this Friday in Huelva in Spain His sister Jessie had a slight injury last week and did not compete but is expected to be back in action this week. Niamh Whelan was competing last week end at the two meetings in Switzerland and in Geneva on Saturday she clocked 12.13 in the 100 metres and 24.27 in the 200 Metres being unplaced in both and on Sunday she clocked 12.44 for the 100 metres again unplaced.   All Ireland School Titles won. Tullamore was the venue for the All Ireland Schools Track and Field finals on Saturday last and athletes from Waterford schools were to the fore.There were six winners and at senior level Ben Kiely Tramore CBS had a great 400 Metres and 400 Metres Hurdles double his winning times being 49.72 and 54.31 respectively, the other winners were Sean Archer St Declan's Kilmacthomas in the Senior Triple Jump with a distance of 13.83 Metres, Kate Veale St Augustine's in the senior 3000 Metres Walk in 13 minutes, Catherine Hahesy do junior Pole Vault with 2.40 metres and Jurijs Kanass do also in the Junior Pole Vault with 3.25 metres.. Sandis Bralitis West Waterford AC  was the first man home in 15 minutes 39 seconds, Ravis Zakis do was second in 15.59 and Brian Murphy Carrick on Suir  third in 16.09. Clare Annan Carrick on Suir was first lady home in 18.56, Corina Walsh West Waterford was second in 19.04 and Aine Roche Clonmel third in 20.01. First man over 40 David Kenneally Thurles Crokes , o 45 Andrew Leary West Waterford, o 50 James Veale do, o 55 Colin Lyons do, Junior Damien Murphy do. Ladies o 35 Catherine Rice Clonmel, o40 Diane Behan Waterford AC, o 45 Ann Dunford West Waterford, o 50 Josie Ui Chuirrin do, Junior Kate Nolan Waterford AC  The Anne Power Memorial Shield for first home in Walk went to Gearoid Hallinan. Kate Selected Athletics Ireland have pre selected five athletes for the World Junior Championships which will be held in Barcelona  from 10 th to 15 th July and Kate Veale West Waterford is among them, she competes in the 10 km Walk. Anyone else who is chasing the Qualification standard has until July 2 nd to achieve it. Both Thomas and Jessie Barr have qualifying times in the 400 Metres Hurdles  for the European Championships in Helsinki from June 27 th to July 1 st and closing date for qualification is June 17 th. For the Olympics athletes have until July 8 th to achieve the ( A ) Standard which the Irish Olympic Council have said athletes must achieve.    National League begins. The first round of the National Senior League is on Sunday next at two venues Tullamore and the Antrim Forum, Ferrybank AC and West Waterford will have teams competing. The Ferrybank men's and women's teams are in the Premier Division and West Waterford men and women are in Division One, all these teams compete in Tullamore with a 10 30 am start.. Munster Juvenile Championships this week end Cork IT Track is the venue this week end for the Munster Juvenile Track and Field Championships for the lower ages. These are under 9 to 11 Team games and under 12 and under 13 Individual Championships. The fixture begins both days at 11am and lots of Waterford athletes competing. Kilmacow Road Race. On Sunday next June 19 th the 11 th Annual Little South 4 miles Road Race is in Kilmacow Co Kilkenny at 2 pm. Entries will be taken from 12.45 pm at the Sports Hall in Kilmacow village.  In Ballyneale near Carrick on Suir on Friday evening of this week June 8 th  the first race in the Oatfield Sports Series the Champion Kiely 5 KM has a  7.30 pm start Workshops. Wednesday June 6th Pole Vault St Abban's AC  Sports Complex Monavea, Crettyard Co Laois 7 to 10 pm Registration from 6.45 pm to 7 pm Thursday June 7 th at same venue as the 6th, Shot Discus and Javelin  6 to 10 pm, Registration 5.45 pm to 6 pm. Monday June 11 th Sprints/Hurdles again at same venue 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm, registration from 6.15 pm to 6.30 pm. Tuesday June 12 th Long Jump, High Jump, Sprints and Hurdles  at Rosslare Strand Community Centre Track 6pm to 9.30 pm Registration 6.15 pm to 6.30 pm.
