Olympic Facts and Figures

Over 2000 track and field athletes from 201 countries competed at the
London Olympics and athletes from just 41 countries got a medal of
some kind out of the 129 on offer between men and women in gold,
silver and bronze. Ireland of course with 18 athletes in 14 events did
not figure in the list but we were in good company as there were no
medals for Spain, Portugal, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland,
Austria to mention but a few. Cuba got one silver and one bronze,
while Japan, Morocco, Finland and Canada got one bronze each, Italy
got one silver as did South Africa. Six athletes retained titles Usain
Bolt Jamacia 100 and 200 Metres, Tomas Majewski Poland Discus,
Tirunesh Dibaba Ethiopia 10000 Metres, Valerie Adams Jamacia  Discus,
Barbara Spatakova Czech Republic Javelin, Shelley Ann Frazer Jamacia
100 metres. In Beejing Kenya won six Gold medals and in London they
won two both with men so a postmortem no doubt will be held there and
in London Ethiopia won three Gold medals all with women. The Olympics
held every four years are not the easiest of places to pick up Track
and Field medals as these statistics prove and it will always be the
same

Liz Hayes Memorial Race

On August Monday 150 competed in the  Liz Hayes Memorial 5 Miles Race
in Ballyduff Lower and there were many walkers also.
Philip Harty Donore Hrs won from local man Paul Stephenson and Frank
Hayes East Cork a cousin of the late Liz was third. Corina Walsh West
Waterford was first lady home,.Claire Tuohy Mayo was second and Joan
Mahony Waterford  was third.
Very well done to all involved in the organisation of the event
especially Joan Stephenson who travelled  far and wide to publicise
it. The event raised Two Thousand One Hundred and Eight Euro and was
given to The Community Centre Development Fund  a cause that would be
dear to the heart of the late Liz Hayes.

Notice on Supplements.

The Irish Sports Council last week issued an advisory notice to
athletes on the use of supplements following the recent case of an
Irish Soccer player who has been sanctioned for the presence of
methylhexanamine after taking the supplement Jack3D and also a case in
Rugby in autumn 2011. Of particular concern to the ISC is the
anecdotal evidence of widespread use in team sports in Ireland.
Commonly labelled under numerous names, methlyhexanamine is classed as
an S6 stimulant on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List and
is prohibited in-competition. Methlyhexanamine is increasingly being
found in nutritional supplements, typically those that are designed to
increase energy or aid weight loss. Many products sold as dietary
supplements openly list this substance on their labels. The list is
available on Athletic Ireland Website and also from the Sports Council
and all athletes and all coaches reading this should make it their
business to check it out

Fintan Walsh's weekly article

Olympic Games

As forecast last week Race Walking was Ireland's top athletic
performer at the Olympic Games and Robert Heffernan in particular was
brilliant.. Ninth in the 20 Km early on in the games with a personal
best he then produced a fantastic result on Saturday last in the
gruelling 50 km event eventually finishing 4th of the 63 starters but
again with a personal best beating his old mark by almost 8 minutes
and in the process achieved the best ever performance ever by an Irish
Walker in the Olympics. Heffernan is a four times Olympian but in the
20 km mainly he had very few 50 k races before London, in the same
race Brendan Boyce from Ireland finished 29 th in a personal best
time. Also Saturday two Irish women competed in the 20 Km Walk in a
field of 61 and both were excellent. Olive Loughnane set a seasons
best in finishing 12 th and Laura Reynolds had a big personal best in
finishing 20 th. .   Other Irish athletes to perform reasonably well
at the Olympics included Derval O'Rourke in the 100 Metres Hurdles
reaching the semi final where despite not making the final she had a
seasons best time of 12.91 seconds but some way short of her best.
Fionnula Britton first of all ran in the 10000 Metres final where she
finished 15 th and then ran a personal best time of 15 minutes 12
seconds in finishing 10 th in the 5000 Metres semi final but it was
not enough to get her into the final, Paul Hession in the 200 Metres
heats was drawn in a very hot heat that included the silver medallist
in the 100 Metres Blake and Hession finished 5th in 20.69 seconds
failing to progress, in the 7 th heat the second and third athlete
both clocked 20.72 and made it through. Joanne Cuddihy made it to the
semi final of the 400 Metres but her times were well below her best.
Linda Byrne and Ava Hutchinson in the Marathon both ran times close to
their best but were well down the field while Caitriona Jennings
injured going into the race finished last of the 107 finishers after
hobbling around for most of the event and probably should never have
started  Athletes to disappoint were Tori Pena in Pole Vault, Ciaran
O'Lionard 1500 metres, Deirdre Ryan High Jump, Mark Kenneally in the
Marathon over a terrible winding course, Alastair Cragg 5000 metres in
which he was a finalist in 2004 and 2008  In the 4 x 400 Metres Relay
the Irish women's team which included Jessie Barr from Ferrybank AC
finished 6th in their heat and after a slow first leg were never in
the hunt as much faster times by all would have been required. Jessie
did run a good leg and enjoyed the wonderful experience, she will now
look ahead to more races this season and a the future for her looks
bright..

General Observations

On a personal note the performance of Mo Farah Great Britain in
winning the 5000 and 10000 Metres was the highlight of the Games as it
broke the stranglehold on these events by the Ethiopians and now gives
great hope to all countries for the future. Usain Bolt in the sprints
was again magnificent and others to catch the eye were from David
Rudisha  Kenya setting a new World record in the 800 Metres from the
front but the second athlete home 17 years old Nigel Amos from
Botswania the World Junior Champion was not far behind and was
magnificent as was 34 year old Felix Sanchez from the Dominican
Republic who won the 400 Metres hurdles. Jessica Ennis Great Britan
was supreme in the decathlon and an athlete for the big occasion,
Maria Savinova Russia was superb in the 800 metres as was Russian
walker 20 year old Elena Lashmanova in the 20 Km with a World record,
a magnificent Olympics very well organised by our neighbours and RTE
television and Radio were terrific. The top country in the individual
events was Russia with 8 wins, USA had  7, Great Britain 4. Once again
Europe was the top continent by far winning 21 of the 43 Gold
Individual medals on offer between men and women, they won 12 of the
men's 22  Gold and 9 of the women's 21. The next games are now four
years ahead but in the interim there will be European and World
Championships and for Irish athletes to succeed they will need plenty
of  the right type of competition leading up to all the major
Championships and that means a lot more than competing in National or
British Championships or low grade events on the Continent. Also where
there are qualifying standards there is very little point of sending
athletes who achieved these standards twelve months before the event
and who have never got near it again especially in the weeks before
the actual Championships. On the subject of Standards if very young
athletes go close to the (A) standard and have the (B) Standard
immediately prior to a Championships then they should be sent, three
or four this year were not sent to the Olympics.

Alan Everett Memorial Race

One hundred and fifty competed in the Annual Alan Everett Memorial
Road Race in Woodstown on Saturday last and in a thrilling finish
James Sullivan overtook the long time leader Frank Quinlan close home
to win in a time of 26 minutes 52 seconds, Quinlan was second in 27.03
and Brian O'Sullivan was third in 29.10. Corina Walsh West Waterford
was first lady home in 31.32,  Sylvia Malone was second in 32.50 and
Joan O'Mahony was third in 33.35 both Waterford AC. First man over 40
Darren Ryan, West Waterford o 45  Bill Egan, o 50 Daryl Hale
Waterford, o 55 Larry Leacy St Joseph's, o 60 Con Kelleher Waterford,
Junior Jack Kingston. First lady o 35 Katherine Grant Waterford,o 40
Theresa Cunningham Carrick on Suir o 45, Mary Wadding o.50, Una Ni
Mhuirrithe, o 55  Patricia O'Keeffe Waterford , Junior Kate Nolan

Fintan Walsh weekly roundup

Jessie Barr a definite on Olympic Team.

Waterford's sole representative at the London Olympics Jessie Barr
from Ferrybank AC is a definite starter on the Irish 4x 400 Metres
Relay team that competes in the semi finals of the event on Friday
evening at 7.10 pm.The team comprises Marian Heffernan wife of walker
Robert Heffernan who runs leg one, Joanne Cuddihy runs the second leg,
Jessie does the third and Michelle Carey runs the final leg. The team
are very much outsiders going into the race but they will be aiming
for a new National record, but even achieving this may not get them to
the final the standard is so high. All in Waterford athletics wish
Jessie the very best and all are proud to have Waterford athletics
represented once again as it has been at every Olympiad since 1980.
Three athletes who are  graduates from Providence College USA where
Ray Treacy Villierstown coaches are among those competing at the
Olympics.

Looking back

Friday last saw the start of the athletics at this years Olympics in
London and at time of writing there have been mixed fortunes for the
Irish athletes competing. First into action was Joanne Cuddihy in the
400 Metres Heats where she finished fourth in her race after starting
off far too fast and fading in the straight but she made it through to
Saturday's semi final as one of the the fastest loser in 52.09 seconds
well outside her best time of 50.73, then on Saturday she ran a much
more balanced race to finish 5 th in 51.88 seconds but in much better
class and did not progress. Fionnula Britton in the 10000 Metres final
finished 15 th and again she may have fared better with a more
restrained run early on where at a very early stage she went up to
dispute the pace, while Ciaran O'Lionard was never a factor in the
1500 metres. Robert Heffernan on Saturday had a fine race in the 20 Km
Walk to finish 9th of the 58 competitors in a personal best time of 1
hr 20 minutes 18 seconds, he was 8th in Beijing in 2008  and Stephanie
O'Reilly had a reasonably good run in the 3000 Metres steeplechase
heats without progressing while Pole Vaulter Tori Pena was most
disappointing  Three  female Marathon runners competed on Sunday with
two of them running near their best Linda Byrne finished  66th and Ava
Hutchinson 68 th and the third Catriona Jennings who went into the
race with an injury in all probability should never have been a
starter and she eventually finished last of the 107 finishers having
been in considerable distress all the way. On Monday morning Derval
O'Rourke came up with her fastest time of the year 12.91seconds in the
100 metres Hurdles finishing 4th in a very competitive heat to qualify
for this evenings semi final a superb performance from a great
competitor for the big occasion regardless of how she fares in the
semi final

Ahead

Today Tuesday Fionnula Britton may run in the 5000 Metres semi final
and Paul Hession is in action in the 200 metres in Round One and he
may progress, on Wednesday Alastair Cragg is in the 5000 Metres and it
depends which Alastair Cragg turns up, Thursday sees Deirdre Ryan in
the High Jump and she has an outside chance of a final place, Friday
sees the 4x 400 Metres Women's Relay team in action in their semi
final and if Britton  progresses the 5000 Metres final is also on
Friday. Saturday could prove to be the best Irish day with Olive
Loughnane in the 20 km walk and Robert Heffernan in the 50 Km Walk
both expected to be prominent Heffernan will be joined by Brendan
Boyce and Colin Griffin and on Sunday Mark Kenneally goes in the
Marathon.

General Observations

At time of writing Usain Bolt Jamacia retained his 100 metres title in
style, up against the greatest field of sprinters ever.  The victory
of Mo Farah Great Britain in the 10000 Metres final was spectacular
and welcome as he relegated the much fancied Ethiopians- who had made
this event their own- to third and fourth place and this should give
hope to athletes from other countries hoping to do likewise especially
those from Europe. Jessica Ennis GB was superb in winning the
Heptathlon title and the stadium has been full to capacity for the
majority of the Track and Field Days and many from Ireland are present
including quite a few from Waterford.

Niamh wins in Sweden

On Saturday last Niamh Whelan had two good results at a meeting in
Goteborg in Sweden. She won a 100 Metres race in 11.84 seconds and
finished second in the 200 metres in 24.16 seconds. At the all Ireland
juvenile Development meeting in Santry on Sunday last Eoin Kenny was
second in the u 13 Shot Putt and Frankie Dolphin was third in the High
Jump u 14 both from Ferrybank AC

Morris Oil 10 Km

200 competed in the final race of the Outfield Sports Road Series
superbly organised by Carrck on Suir Road Runners in Piltown on Friday
last. Philip Harty Donore Hrs easily won in a time of 31 minutes 50
second, Andrew Connick Ferrybank AC was second and Ruari O'Donnell
Limerick third. Siobhan Doherty Borrisokane won the ladies section
again very impressively in 36 minutes, Angela McCann Clonmel was
second and Dymphna Ryan Dundrum  third The series was a  great success
with entries well up on previous years. Each competitor who competed
in three races in the Series got a special memento and there were many
athletes from Waterford among them.

Woodstown Road Race on Saturday

The Annual Alan Everett 5 Miles Road Race in Woodstown Co Waterford
on Saturday next has a 7 pm start. entries from 6 pm at "The Saratoga"
in Woodstown. The run will be preceded by a walk at 6.45 pm and is
