Weekend results

A hugely successful night of athletics in Oordegem in Belgium last night. Jessie Barr knocked an amazing half second off her pb to finish 2nd overall in the 400m hurdles in a time of 56.16. Superb running well under the European A standard and Olympic B standard. She is now very close to that elusive Olympic A standard. Thomas Barr had a great run also with 51.50 which is a seasons best for him. Ben Kiely won his race in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.09 , very close to his pb. In America Mairead Murphy ran a very quick 13.62 in the 100m hurdles.

Viking Marathon Stewards

Waterford Viking Marathon Saturday June 30th. We are looking for volunteers (over 18) to assist with stewarding for this event. If you can assist or know anyone who would be willing to help out please text me by Wednesday June 6th. All assistance is much appreciated

Athletics Roundup by Fintan Walsh, County PRO

Belgian win for Jessie

On Wednesday last at the Flanders Cup meeting in Namur, Belguim Jessie
Barr in her first International race of the season won the 400 Metres
Hurdles in 57.83 seconds and on Sunday last in Loughboro in England
she finished second in another 400 Metres Hurdles event in a slightly
faster time of 57.38 sec, also in Loughboro her brother Thomas won the
a 400 Metres Hurdles race in 51.38 seconds and Niamh Whelan was fifth
in a 200 metres in 25.42 and 7 th in a 100 metres in 12.43. Kelly
Proper was due to compete in Germany last Sunday but withdrew with a
slight injury. From now on all athletes looking for Olympic
Qualification will be attempting to get suitable competition on a
regular basis.

AAI Games

 Santry Stadium was the venue on Sunday last where a number of
athletes from Waterford clubs competed in the AAI Games and there were
two victories. Thomas Houlihan West Waterford AC in winning the Pole
Vault had a personal best of 4.60 Metres and Leona Byrne Ferrybank won
the High Jump and was third in the Sprint Hurdles, Chris Russell do
was second in the 100 Metres and third placings were secured by Gavin
Downey 1500 metres and Kate Hickey West Waterford in the Discus. Laura
Behan KCK was fourth in the 800 Metres in 2minutes 15 seconds a PB and
she also had a PB in finishing second in  the 1500 Metres at a graded
meeting in Dublin last week 4.37.

Munster Schools

In Cork on Saturday last athletes from Waterford schools had numerous
victories and lots of second and third placings also at the Munster
Secondary Schools Track and Field Championship Finals.The following
were the senior winners: Ben Kiely Tramore CBS 400 Metres Hurdles and
400 Metres, Kate Veale St Augustine's 3000 M Walk, Clodagh Ryan do
Pole Vault and Sean Archer St Declan's Kilmacthomas Triple Jump.
Intermediate: High Jump Neasa Murphy Stella Maris Tramore, Pole Vault
Megan O'Connor St Augustine's, Long Jump Niamh Giles Doran Mercy,
Triple Jump Liz Devine St Augustine's, 2000 M Walk Tara Lacey Abbey
CC, Relay Stella Maris ( Lauren Gillane, Niamh Mc Nicoll, Neasa Murphy
and Vanessa Ogbonna). Junior: Pole Vault Catherine Hahesy St
Augustine's, 1200 M Walk Isabelle Morgan Ursuline, 200 M Patrick
O'Neill Abbey, Pole Vault Jurijs Kanass St Augustine's and Discus and
Javelin Mike Dineen De La Salle. St Augustine's won the Junior Boy's
Cup.

County Championships conclude

The final section of the County Track and Field Championships were
held at the RSC on Sunday last and a fine entry was again received and
all of the clubs in the County got among the winners, full results
have now been sent to all clubs. At Juvenile level Farrybank AC had
many athletes that won more than one title with Sean Archer taking
five under 18, Amy Foley four u 15 and Orlaith O'Brien four u 14 and
several had doubles. For West Waterford Tholm Reddy won three u 16,
Jurij Kanass three also in the same age group and for Waterford AC
Nathan O' Hallahan won two u 18 and Emma O'Brien two u 16u, for An
Ghaeltacht Ciaran O'Maoileoin won two u 14 and for Tramore AC Jessica
Wagenaar u12 and Niamh M Nicoll u 16 both impressed  At senior level
Paschal Halley Waterford AC won three senior and Clare Grant do two.
The County Board wish to to thank all the people who helped out over
the two Sunday's

Big Improvement by Kevin

Kevin Cooper who is in the USA at Brown University has been showing a
big improvement in his times especially in the 1500 Metres Recently he
clocked 3 minute 44 second for the distance and if he continues to
improve he could be heading for a sub four minute mile in the not too
distant future

International Meetings

On Saturday next Thomas and Jessie Barr and Niamh Whelan compete at a
meeting in Belgium and Ben Kiely may be at one in Germany the same
day.

Road Race in Clashmore

The next race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series "The Old Still Bar
5 Miles"  is in Clashmore Co Waterford on Friday next May 25 th. The
race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore. Entries for the race
will be taken at the Old Still Bar in the village from 7 pm and the

Munster Juvenile U/9 to U/11 Team Games & U/12 & U/13 Track & Field
Championships, Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th June 2012 in Cork I.T.
Munster Senior & Masters Track & Field Championships, Sunday 17th June
2012 in Templemore, Co. Tipperary. The All Ireland Schools Finals are
in Tullamore on Saturday June 2 nd.

Coaching Workshops

 Wed May 23rd: High Jump Workshop at the Dr Pat O Callaghan Sports
Complex Track in Clonmel Co Tipperary from 7-9pm. The session is open
to all athletes/coaches aged 12+ only and the cost is €5 payable at
registration from 6.40pm-6.55pm. AAI Director of Coaching Jacqui
Freyne will be taking the session.Sun May 27th: Discus & Hammer
Workshop at Templemore Track Co Tipperary 10.30am-1.45pm. The cost is
€5 payable on the day at registration at 10am. National Coaches will
be taking the sessions and it is open to all athletes/coaches aged
13+.

Kip Keino

Clonliffe Harriers are delighted to announce that legendary double
Olympic champion Kip Keino will return to the Morton Stadium  They
will play host to him for ‘An evening with Kip Keino’ presented by
Irish Runner Editor Frank Greally from 9 pm. Kip Keino has competed in
Santry on two occasions and was the winner of the inaugural Morton
Memorial Invitational Mile in 1970. This presents a unique opportunity
to come and meet a true athletics and Olympic legend. Booking is
essential, the Clonliffe clubhouse had a limit of 120 people. Bookings
will be taken on a first come first served basis, in order to secure
your place at this once in a lifetime occasion please email your name,

County Champs / AI Games / Loughborough Int


  • Good results also from the Ai games in Santry today. Leona Byrne had a fine jump of 1.70m to win the high jump and was also third in the 100m hurdles. Chris Russell was second in the 100m in 10.86 and third in the 200m in 21.64. Gavin Downey had a fine run for third place in the 1500m in 4.01 and Alan Danagher also had a great run to record 2.02 for the 800m. Well done folks!


  • Fantastic day for Jessie and Thomas Barr in the Loughborough International Meet today. Jessie was second in a fine time of 57.38. She is really sharpening into superb form. Thomas won his race in a fine time of 51.8. Both were competing in the 400m hurdles. Well done Jessie & Thomas!


  • Another hugely successful day at the county championships today. Loads of medals won in all age groups! Well done to everyone who competed!

Munster Schools Results

Some excellent results from the Munster Schools Championships in CIT today. Ben Kiely had two lifetime best performances when he won the senior 400m hurdles and 400m. Neasa Murphy won the Inter HJ with a leap of 1.55m, Sean Archer won the senior TJ, Patrick O Neill had an excellent win in the junior boys 200m and Niamh Giles Doran had a fine jump of 5.28m to win the Inter LJ. Siobhan Whelan was second in the inter LJ, James Greene was second in the senior 400m and Orla Quelly was second in the inter 800m and Aisling Quinn was second in the inter 1500m.Chris Noonan was third in the junior LJ.  Ciara Giles Doran was third in the senior 400m hurdles. Niamh Giles Doran was third in the Inter 100m. Fine performances all round. A huge well done to everyone who competed.

Roundup by Fintan Walsh, county PRO


 Maireads new Irish record.

 Last week end Mairead Murphy Ferrybank AC currently at Kansas StateUniversity set a new Irish Senior record in the Heptathlon placing 4thoverall in the Big 12 Conference in Kansas she had a total of5399points to record the best ever score by an Irish lady in the
Heptathlon. (13.88 seconds in 100 metres Hurdles, 1.63 M, in High
Jump, 11.31 in Shot Putt, 24.61, in 200 M, 5.66M , in Long Jump,
31.59 M in Javelin., 2min.18.8 seconds in 800 M). She has added 5
points to the old record held by Sharon Foley back in 1997. 

County Championships

 Day One of the County Championships at the RSC on Sunday last
attracted a great crowd of athletes from all the clubs in the county
and each club had athletes in the winners enclosure. For Ferrybank
Sean Archer won five titles between junior and senior, Paul Murphy
four u 18, Cormac Mc Cann three u 15,doubles were recorded by Fiona Egboko u 12, Molly Hutchinson u13, Conor Giles Doran u 14John Halley junior. West Waterford athletes to score doubles were Kate Mc Grath, Jurys Kanass u 16, Kate Hickey Junior and u 18 for Tramore Niamh Mc Nicoll won two titles u 16 and Brendan Leahy Waterford Ac won two masters titles. Athletes to impress for An Ghaltacht were Ciaran O'Maoileoin u 14 and Thomas Ahearn u 13 while Kylie Heinen KCK u 11also caught the eye. Full set of results are now with all clubs..

East Munster Boy's Championships

On Wednesday last May 9th the East Munster Secondary School Boys Championships were at the RSC and athletes from Waterford schools captured the major share of the titles. Doubles were recorded by the following athletes: Senior Ben Kiely Tramore CBS 400 Metres and 400Metres Hurdles the latter with a new record of 54.50 seconds, John Halley St Declan's Kilmacthomas had a sprint double in the 100 and 200Metres, Sean Archer do won the Long Jump and Triple Jump and Jamie Walsh St Augustine's the Shot Putt and Discus. Munster titles won

On May Bank Holiday Monday there were a number of athletes from
Waterford Clubs who won titles and also collected silver and bronze
medals at the Munster Championship fixture in Castleisland. For West Waterford Lisa Houlihan won the junior Pole Vault and was second in the 100 M Hurdles, Clare Collins won the u 23 Pole Vault, Thomas Houlihan the Junior Pole Vault and Kate Hickey was third in the junior Discus. For Ferrybank Ciara Cronin back in action again won the under23  800 metres, Sean Archer won the Junior Triple Jump, John Hally was second in the Junior 200 metres and third in the 100 metres. In the Juvenile Combined  Events there were two winners Cormac Mc Cann u15and Tom Gallagher u 12  and Fiona Egboko was second under 12  allFerrybank and for Waterford AC Cathal Scanlon was third u 11 and Gwyneth Blair third u 15.

USA Results

Mary O'Connor finished third in the 800 metres at the America East
Outdoor Championships in Orono ME recently in a personal best time of2 minutes 9.48 seconds. At the Atlantic 10 Conference - Amherst, MA Kalyn Sheehan won the 100 Metres Hurdles in 13.91 seconds and finished5 th in the 400 Metres Hurdles final in 61.23. In Tampa Florida at the Big East Championships David McCarthy was 8 th in the 10000 Metres final in 33.14.97

Day Two of County Championships on Sunday

The RSC is the venue on Sunday next for the second section of the
County Track and Field Championships and again there are numerous events for Juveniles, Juniors, Seniors and Masters with the first event at 11 am. Full programme of events is with all clubs for past two months and again lots of help required on Sunday from all
clubs.The Munster schools Finals are at Cork IT on Saturday next.

Chris wins in Dublin

Well done to Chris Russell who won the 200m in the Dublin graded meet in Irishtown last night running 21.93s. Well done also to Andrew Connick who was 5th in the 1500m in 3.59.
