Big win for David McCarthy

On Sunday last at the Gerry Farnan open Cross Country race in Dublin's
Phoenix Park there was an impressive front running winning performance
by David McCarthy of West Waterford A.C in the men’s senior race. A
graduate of Providence College in the USA, McCarthy had  spent the
last three weeks at Font Remu in the company of Fionnuala Britton and
a group of other Irish athletes.McCarthy went clear of Michael Mulhare
(North Laois A.C) with two laps of the five mile course remaining and
ran on strongly to finish in 24:20. Michael Mulhare finished second-
thirty seconds adrift and Eddie McGinley ( Annadale Striders ) placed
third in 24:53.“That run should shake any cobwebs off, “ a delighted
David McCarthy said. “I have a number of weeks of good training behind
me now and it is time to put the good training into action. “I am just
back from Font Remu- my first time at altitude training- and a great
experience. I have not raced seriously since the indoors early in the
year. I ran a few low key road races but nothing serious. My sights
are now set on the European Cross Country Championships and I want to
run well in that competition. We can have a strong senior men’s team
there. The talent is there. The team members who won medals in the
event at under 23 level two years ago are all running well and there
should be great competition to make the team for Budapest.”

Honoured.

Brother Colm O’Connell from County Cork, Irish missionary and coach
of five Kenyan Olympic Gold medallists, was conferred last week with
an honorary Doctor of Philosophy at Dublin City University. On hand to
witness the event was David Rudisha, world record-holder, winner of
the London 2012 800m Gold medal and alumnus of Brother Colm’s
world-renowned athletics coaching programme in Kenya’s Rift Valley.
Accepting his honorary degree, Brother Colm O’Connell said,“It is a
very humbling experience for me to stand here today to receive such an
honour. When looking down through the list of honorary graduates who
have gone before me in being honoured by this distinguished
university, I feel, indeed, very happy. Also, for somebody to be
selected from a remote little village in the highlands of Western
Kenya and to be recognised in such a manner is beyond my wildest
dreams and imaginings.”A member of the Patrician missionary order,
Brother Colm joined St Patrick’s High School in Iten, Kenya as a
geography teacher in 1976. Thirty-six years later, he is still in Iten
and is now acknowledged as the world’s most successful coach of
endurance running, having nurtured five Olympic Gold medallists and 25
world champions.Guests in attendance at the honorary graduation
ceremony included Linda Byrne, 2012 Irish Olympian and marathon
runner; Senator Eamonn Coghlan; Mr John Foley, Chief Executive of the
Athletic Association of Ireland; HE Ms Catherine Muigai Mwangi,
Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya; and Mr John Treacy, Irish Sports
Council.
