Connick second in all Ireland Novice Cross Country

Over 2000 competitors from all over the 32 counties competed at the Woodies DIY All Ireland Novice and under age Cross Country Championships held at the WIT Sports Campus in Waterford on Sunday last over a very demanding course which was typical cross country terrain. Best Waterford performance came from Andrew Connick Ferrybank AC who finished second in the novice race out of a field of 222. After 1000 metres or so of the race Connick together with pre race favourite Sean Tobin Clonmel - who had finished 9 th in the European Junior Cross Country championship the week before- broke away from the field and they fought a thrilling duel They were still close together with 1000 metres to go but a slip at a bend saw Connick come down. Despite quickly regaining his momentum again he could not peg back Tobin who took the title convincingly in the end. Waterford finished 4 th of the 14 teams in the Inter County team section which was a good effort, the other scorers were Trevor Power 43 rd, Shane Maher 47 th, Gary Cantwell 58 th, Brian Swaby 75 th and PJ Scollard 88th, first lady home for Waterford in the Novice race was Ciara Cronin Ferrybank In the juvenile section Waterford's best performers were Oisin Riordan West Waterford 6 th under 11, Aoife Casey Ferrybank 9 th u 13, Sean Curran West Waterford 9 th u 17 and Aoife Hamilton do 11 th under 17. West Waterford were 4 th club in both the girls under 15 and girls under 17 and Waterford were 4 th county in the same category. Provincial team titles were also up for grabs and Sean Curran and Oisin Riordan were both on winning Munster teams It would appear from the results in general that Waterford is now some way behind other counties in cross country.  Organised by Waterford AC with the help of other clubs in the county it was a superbly run fixture over a very well laid out course and many stewards were on duty men and women .The driving forces behind the event were Tom O'Brien and Cait Caulfield Waterford AC who secured the event for the club and WIT.Great support was provided by Mick Evans Manager at the Centre and also by the Management there and the Order of Malta were on hand to look after the needs of athletes who needed medical assistance. Athletics Ireland officials were loud in their praise of the venue and the organisation..

Incorrect Numbers

Once again people running with another persons number competed in the recent Waterford Half Marathon and consequently caused many problems with the results after the race with people getting prizes they did not win and others who had been entitled to them excluded, none of it the fault of the organisers. Men being credited with a certain placing when in fact it was a woman that wore the number and visa versa was a major problem as indeed was anyone wearing a number that was not theirs. Many have suggested that those found to be involved in this carry on be excluded entry to future races as is apparently done in other counties, people dealing with results I'm sure would support this suggestion and may have to bring it in here in Waterford. It mainly occurs in races where there are pre entries and someone decides a few days before the event that they cannot run and passes it on to someone else. Please destroy the number if you are not participating yourself when you see the problems that can be caused - its not rocket science- and give those totting up the results a clear run

All Ireland Cross Country

On Sunday last the All Ireland Senior and Junior Inter County Cross Country Championships as well as the juvenile even age groups were held in Santry in Dublin with lots of athletes from all over Ireland competing but the Waterford entry was very small in most events. After disputing the lead for quite a lot of the race David Mc Carthy West Waterford AC slipped on the surface and lost his momentum eventually finishing 7 th in the senior race and Andrew Connick Ferrybank AC was 18 th, Paul Stephenson was 52 nd and these were the only Waterford athletes to compete, none were in the junior races either. With so many participating in road races locally it seems that very few athletes are emerging as competitors in major championships and stick mainly to road race. Fionnula britto was a class apart in winning the senior ladies race. Athletes from the county who finish well up in these races should be able to perform well for teams in major championships. In  the juvenile championships West Waterford AC athletes did well. In the under 12 grade Lucy Holmes was 5 th and Aoife O'Brien 6 th and West Waterford AC were second club while the two girls were on the winning Munster team ,in the same grade Cormac Mahony was 7 th and was on the Munster team that was second. Aoife Hamilton was 5 th in the under 16 race and Hannah Power 12 th and West Waterford were second club and Waterford third county, the team was made up of all West Waterford athletes Hamilton, Power, Caiomhe Dwyer, Sinead Flynn, Darina Shanley and Emma Hallahan, they were also on the winning Munster team.. Another West Waterford athlete Miceal Power was on the winning Munster team under 16 and was 18 th overall  .Aoife Hamilton after her performance in finishing 5 th under16 has been selected on the Irish team for the Celtic Cross Country International in January.

Albert Thomas RIP.

The death took place last week of  former Olympian and World Record holders Albert Thomas from Australia . He broke World records, competed at three Olympic Games, was a dual Commonwealth Games medallist and after his career he coached and worked tirelessly for his athletics club.  Any of us who happened to be in Morton Stadium in Santry in Dublin  in August 1958 when Herb Elliott set a new world record for the mile of 3.54.5 on  a cinder track with four other athletes under the 4 minutes including Ronnie Delany and also Thomas will remember Thomas as the athlete who set the pace for him, then the following evening Thomas himself set a new World mark for the two miles in Santry..
