Jessie wins in France!

Jessie Barr had a fine win in Chambery , France today in a Hurdles Gala event with a seasons best of 56.74s....getting very close to the World Championships standard!

National Junior & U 23 Championships

It was a hugely successful day in Tullamore at the National Junior and under 23 Championships. Gold medals for Thomas Barr u 23 400m hurdles, Ben Kiely Junior 400m hurdles, Shane O Dwyer u 23 high jump and Sean Archer u 23 triple jump. Silver for Megan Kiely jun 400m hurdles and bronze for Neasa Murphy junior high jump. Well done everyone on  a great haul of medals!

Seasons best for Jessie in France

Tailteann Schools Inter Provincial 29th June Tullamore

Tailteann Schools Inter Provincial results from Tullamore....well done to Neasa Murphy 2nd in the high jump, Niamh McNichol 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m, 2nd in 4 X 300m, 3rd in 4 X 100 and Orla O Brien 2nd in the javelin.

All Ireland u 9-11 team competition , Finn Valley Stadium June 29.

A huge well done to Rachel Walsh and Praise Owoeye who made the long journey to Donegal and returned with gold medals in the 60m pairs and also the long jump under 11. Well done girls - a fabulous achievement.

European Team Championships - Dublin June 22 & 23

Well done to our four athletes who all competed with such distinction for Ireland in Dublin at the European Team Championships. Jessie Barr was third in the hurdles and anchored her 4 X 400m relay to third overall. Niamh Whelan ran a super leg in the 4X 100m to help her team to third overall. Shane Quinn was a brilliant fourth in the 5000m and Kelly Proper was seventh in the long jump. Ireland finished in seventh place in this compeition and maintained first league staus for next year.

Munster u 9-13 Championships, Ennis June 9th. & 10th.

Well done to all our athletes who competed in the Munster u 9-13 championships in Ennis. Congratultions to Tom Gallagher who won the long jump u 13 and was second in the high jump. Michael Mulligan had a fabulous win in the u 12 turbo javelin and Kylie Heinan was third in the long jump u 12.  In the pairs team competition Praise Owoeye and Paula Igwe were 1st in the 60m under 11 and David Igwe and Keegan Borla were third in the turbo javelin under 9. Praise Owoeye won the 60m under 11 and Paula Igwe was third in the long jump under 11. The girls under 11 relay  - Praise, Paula, Rachel Walsh and Mia Crawford won the relay. Congratulations to everyone on a terrific weekend.

All Ireland Schools

Well done to all our athletes who competed at the All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore on July 1st. Congratulations to gold medal winners neasa Murphy (Inter high jump) and Orlaith O brien ( Junior Javelin). Well done to Paul Murphy won bronze in the senior 200m & 400m. Well done also to Megan Kiely who won bronze in the senior 400m.

Second Annual WLRFM Waterford Viking Marathon on Saturday

Waterford City and its environs as well as the main Tramore Road,
Outer Ring Road and Tramore itself and its environs will come alive on
Saturday next for the second Annual WLRFM Waterford Viking Marathon,
Half Marathon and Relay with the three events all starting near City
Hall at 9 am sharp. 2000  will be participating  including entries
from the USA ,Poland,Australia,Germany the UK  but the majority are
from all over Ireland including Olympian Pauline Curley with a huge
local entryalso and many will run for various charities local and
national while the proceeds from the events will be shared between the
Waterford Alzheimer Society and Waterford Hospice. Traffic
restrictions and road closures will be in place and all can be seen on
Waterford Viking Marathon Website. The finish of the events will be
inside the Regional Sports Centre with the Half Marathon leaders
expected in there shortly after 10 am and the Marathon leaders after
11.15 am. At the start all competitive runners to line up at the front
of the group. The Gardai and many stewards will be along the route as
well as first aid groups and please be aware of cats eyes which may be
situated in one or two areas where the run takes place- and  which
could cause one to trip over. All are asked to obey the Gardai and
stewards and no crossing over on roads please, all stewarding is done
for safety of competitors.

European Team Championships

Over two very breezy days in Morton Stadium in Dublin last week end
the European Team Championships League 1 went ahead and there were two
marvellous days of competition with Ireland finishing up in 7 th place
overall of the twelve competing nations their best result ever in this
competition and easily retaining  Division 1 status. Five athletes
from Waterford were on the Irish teams and they had some fine
performances. Jessie Barr anchored the Irish 4 x 400 metres relay team
that won their heat and finished third overall and she was also third
in the 400 metres hurdles in her heat in 57.50 seconds.  Niamh Whelan
was on the Irish 4 x 100 metres relay team that finished second in
their heat and two middle distance runners David McCarthy 3000 metres
and Shane Quinn 5000 metres both ran very good races and both finished
4th in their events. Kelly Proper in the long jump in very difficult
conditions for the event  was a little below her best in finishing 8
th with 5.91 metres. The best individual performance of the  event was
the brilliant win by Brian Greegan in the 400 metres but the
performance of the week end from an Irish viewpoint was the victory of
the men's 4 x 400 meres relay team which included Dara Kervick from
the Carrick on Suir club. In all the races on the track from 800
metres upwards it was great to see real racing with very little
emphasis on fast times but mainly on tactics. A lot of work however is
needed on the field events side of Irish Athletics.. Next year there
are world Championship Relays for the first time and Ireland should be
capable of sending strong men's and women's 400 metres squads.

Zakis wins Dromana 5 Miles

160 competed in the 21 st Annual Dungarvan Leader 5 Miles road race
from Villierstown to Cappoquin on Friday last another race in the Ger
Wyley Sports Nike Series. Ravis Zakiis West Waterford AC was the
comfortable winner in a time of 25 minutes 58 seconds,. Michael Lyons
Grange/Fermoy was second in 26.33 and Alan Whitaker UCC  third in
27.02. First lady home was Nollaig O'Neill Leevale Cork in 30.44,
Sinead Mansfield was second in 31.52 and Corina Walsh West Waterford
third in 32.16. West Waterford AC won the male and female team prizes.

National Championships in Tullamore and Donegal this week end

Tullamore is the venue on Sunday next for the All Ireland junior and
under 23 Championships and many athletes from Waterford clubs
especially Ferrybank and West Waterford will compete. The competition
gets underway at 10.30 am and where heats are not necessary finals
will be staged at the times allocated for heats, full programme on

Juveniles in Donegal

On Saturday next a number of juvenile athletes from the county will
make the long journey to County Donegal for the All Ireland under 9,10
and 11 team games ,the venue is Finn Valley, Stranorlar Co Donegal
and check in opens at 9 am and competition starts at 10.30 am.also on
Saturday there are International Race Walks in Dublin at St Anne's
Park they begin at 9.30 am

Track opened

Minister of State Michael Ring Dept of Tourism and Sport officially
opened the new track at the RSC on Thursday last in the presence of
The Mayor and public representatives both local and national as well
as representatives from athletic clubs, Special Olympics and other
organisations who will use the facility. He said he hoped it would
give years of enjoyment to men, women and children in the region and
paid tribute to all voluntary workers in sport. The track costing
almost half a million euro is on a par with any track in the world.
Mayor of Waterford  Cllr Jim D'Arcy thanked the minister and his dept
and his fellow councillors for their support for the venture and urged
all to use the facility also.. Fintan Walsh Waterford Athletics  PRO
who was MC for the opening again thanked the Minister, the Mayor and
City Council, Deputy John Deasy for his input and made a special
mention of Vinnie O'Shea  Administrative Officer - Community Services,
Waterford  City Council and Darren Sealy and the staff at RSC for the
always friendly and supportive approach they adopt.. He also mentioned
that essential equipment was still needed to really then call it an
International style facility.he also asked all users to respect the
facility as regards the correct footwear and spikes and obey the staff
on duty at all times..( 5 mm spikes or 6 mm pyramid or  6 mm xmas tree
spikes only allowed on track, spot checks will take place regularly by
staff,  no blocks at 400 metres start )    A sports was held prior to
the opening with running racesand field events and participating were
were athletes from Waterford
AC, Ferrybank AC, Tramore AC, KCK. AC, and Carrick on Suir AC and
competitors from the Special Olympics also took part..One athlete from
each athletic club joined the Minister as he cut the tape

Civic Reception.

 The Mayor of Dungarvan Cllr Micheal Cosgrove and the members of the
Town Council accorded a Civic Reception to Joe Gough on his home patch
In The Civic Offices in Dungarvan on Thursday last in recognition of
his great athletic feats in master's competitions at National and
International level

July will see World and European Championships held including World
University Games in Russia, 6th to 17 th, World Youth Championships in
Ukraine 10 th to 14 th, European under 23 Championships in  Finland 11
th to 14 th, European Youth Olympics in  Holland 14 th to 19 th, (
Niamh Mc Nichol Ferrybank on Irish team ) European Junior
Championships in Italy 18 th to 21 st. Then from August 10 th to 18 th
the World Championships are in Moscow

European Team Championships in Santry

On Saturday and Sunday next one of the biggest athletics events to be
staged in Ireland for years goes ahead in Morton Stadium in Dublin the
European Team Championships League One The Morton Stadium, Santry,
Dublin, is one of the most famous athletics stadiums in the world. The
stadium has held numerous national athletics championships and
international athletics competitions over the years, and will always
be remembered in the annals of world athletics history when 5 men
including Ronnie Delany broke the 4-minute mile barrier in the same
race in 1958, in front of 20,000 passionate Irish athletics fans.
The challenge to the Irish Team to keep it's 1st League status will be
one that all of the fifty strong Irish Athletics Team, together with
support staff, will relish, in what will no doubt be the highest
quality athletics meeting ever staged in Ireland.The Morton Stadium is
expected to be full with Irish supporters for the two days of
competition to give real support to the Irish Team in their endeavours
to finish in the top 10 European teams over the weekends some 40
events.  The Irish Team will be competing against teams from eleven
other European countries in Santry. These teams are:Belgium, Bulgaria,
Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Netherlands, Portugal,
Romania, Sweden and Switzerland. Dublin has hosted this prestigious
event on five previous occasions, the last being in 1997.  Over 650
athletes, from twelve European Countries, will be competing in twenty
events for Men and Women over the two days in Santry,. Waterford will
have five athletes on the Irish team Olympian Jessie Barr in 400
metres hurdles and 4 x 400 m relay.Kelly Proper long jump, Niamh
Whelan 4x 100 m relay, Brendan Quinn 5000 metres all Ferrybank and

International news

Ben Kiely Ferrybank AC finished 4 th in the British AAA under 20 400
metres hurdles championships in Bedford last week end in a time of
53.35 seconds a B standard for the Europen Junior Championships and in
Budapest Niamh Whelan was 2 nd in a 200 metres race in 23.84 and third
in a 100 metres inn 11.87.

Munster Juvenile winners

Templemore in Tipperary was the venue on Saturday and Sunday last for
the Munster under 14 to 19 Championships and there were numerous gold
medals won by Ferrybank AC in particular but also by West Waterford AC
, Waterford AC and Tramore AC. as well as lots of silver and bronze
for all clubs also. The Ferrybank winners were Neasa Murphy high jump
u 17 1.70 metres a European Youth Olympic Qualifying standard, Orlaith
O'Brien u 15 discus and javelin the latter with a new record of 40.97
metres a massive seven metres better than tho old mark, Cormac Cann
200 m hurdles u 16, Siobhan Whelan u 18 triple jump, Frankie Dolphin u
15 triple jump, Chris Noonan 400 m hurdes u 17, Paul Murphy 200 m and
400 m u 18. Niamh Mc Nichol 100 and 200 m u 17, Niamh Giles Doran U 18
long jump, Conor Giles Doran u 15 javelin, Sean Whittle u 18 triple
jump, Chloe Farrell u 14  high jump, boys u 18 relay, boys u 15 relay.
Silver medals went to Orlaith O'Brien u 15, Tom Gallagher u 13, Eoin

Waterford AC winners were James Murphy u 14 high jump and Kathleen
Heery u 15 Hammer, silver medals went to James Murphy u 14, Ruth Heery
u 16, Emma O'Brien u 17, Niamh Denn u 14  and bronze to Hannah Jacob
and Orla O'Connor and the Tramore AC boys under 14 relay team won, the
squad being Mark and Ian Hartery, Jamie Stone and Shane Monagle,
Denise O.Coonnor also won a silver and bronze medal u 15 in both
hurdles.

 Clashmore 5 miles details

150 competed in the 12th  Annual Old Still Bar 5 miles road race in
Clashmore on Friday last race 6 of the Ger Wyley Sports Series and the
winner was Michael Lyons Grange/Fermoy in 27 minutes 31 seconds, Keven
Kenneally West Waterford was second in 28.33 and Sean Caulfield St
Senan's Kilmacow third in 29.11. Angela McCann Clonmel led the ladies
home in 31.15, Sinead Mansfield was second in 32.25 and Corina Walsh
West Waterford  third in 33.13.First man over 40 was Peter Duggan St
Joseph's, o 45 Ray Hallissey West Waterford, o 50 Walter Keane
Waterford, o 55 Nelius Ahearne Midleton, Junior Richard Stillwell West
Waterford. Women o 35 Ann Marie St Catherine's, o 40 Claudia Lane Mary

Quinlan wins Fenor 15 KM

 Over 200 competed in the 15 km Road Race in Fenor on Sunday last in
aid of the Fenor GAA Club. The easy winner was Frank Quinlan in  51
minutes 39 seconds, Trevor Power was second in 53.32 both Waterford AC
and Conaill Cooper Slaney Olympic was third in 54.45. Joan Mahony
Waterford AC was first lady home in 65.42, Esther Murphy St Finbarr's
Cork was second in 66.13 with Deirde Ni Chearbaill  Crusaders Dublibn
third in 68.13. The category winners were as follows.Men ; o 40 Finlay
Weir Waterford, o 45 Michael Dunford West Waterford, o 50 Walter Keane

21st  Annual Dungarvan Leader Dromana 5 Miles on Friday

Now in its 21st  year and a very popular race run over the famous
Dromana Drive from Villerstown to Cappoquin takes place on this coming
Friday June 21 st at 8 pm. Entries will be taken at Villerstown
Community Hall with the presentation of prizes at Danny Flynn's Bar of
Cappoquin,.entry fee €5

Two AAI Games winners in Santry

On Sunday last at the AAI Games in Santry Stadium Dublin two athletes
from Waterford had fine victories competing against the best in the
country..Niamh Whelan ran her best race for some time when she won the
200 metres in 23.70 seconds which is inside the qualifying standard
for the World University Games later this season,she also finished
second in the 100 metres in 12.04. Thomas Houlihan West Waterford AC
had a personal best in winning the pole vault with 4.60 metres, Niall
Tuohy  was second in the 800 metres in 1.50.45 and Sorcha Murphy third
in the high jump with 1.60 metres both Ferrybank..

Many Munster juvenile winners

Ennis was the venue on Saturday and Sunday last for the Munster u 9 to
11 team competitions and under 12 and 13  championships and there were
many medals won by athletes from Waterford clubs. For Ferrybank AC the
following won individual titles, Michael Mulligan under 12 javelin,
Tom Gallagher u 13 long jump, girls under 12 relay team, Praise Owoye
and Paula Igwee won the under 11 60 m team with Praise first
individual and Paula third, silver medals winners were Tom Gallagher u
13 high jump, bronze medal winners were David Igwee and Robbie Duffy
in team sprint u 9, Kylie Heinen  u 12 high jump and David Igwee and
Keegan Borla javelin team u 9.For Waterford AC Jack Deegan and Victory
Eddy won the 60 m team competition with Jack first individual, there
was also a first for Jack Deegan and Evan Hayes in the u 11 long jump
team with Jack first individual, in the javelin team the girls u 10
Sarah Heery and Emer Walsh were second and Sarah won the individual
award, Shane Cawley was second in the u 12 shot putt the boys u 11
relay team were also second and Lindsey McGuire was third in the 600
metres u 13, in the javelin team competition under 9 Lydia Rowe and
Melanie Buck were third and Lydia was third overall, in the 60 metres
team u 10 Jack Corcoran and Fortune Eddy were third, other good
performances came from Sarah Jacob in the shot putt under 12 and  Emer
McGlynn 600 m u 12,both fourth

Maher wins in Kilmacow

250 competed in the Little South 4 miles road race in Kilmacow on
Sunday last and it was a terrific race up front with Brian Maher
Kilkenny City Hrs holding on to beat Alan O'Shea Bantry and Philip
Harty West Waterford was not far behind in third spot. Jacqui Carthy
Kilmore won the ladies section from Sylvia Malone Waterford and Grace
McConnell Ballyroan/Abbeyleix was third.  Details;

Bantry athlete wins in Carrick on Suir.

Race 3 in the Outfield Sports Three County Challenge took place in
Carrick on Suir on Friday evening last and there was an entry of 180.
The Carraig Hotel 5 miles was won decisively by Alan O'Shea from
Bantry in 25 minutes 46 seconds, Frank Quinlan Waterford AC ran very
well to finish second in 26.38 and David Ryan Clonmel was third in
26.56. Siobhan O'Doherty Borrisokane won the ladies section in 28.19.
Dympna Ryan, Dundrum was second in 29.33 and Angela McCann Clonmel
third in 31.08

Munster  Fixture in Templemore

 The Munster U/14 to U/19 Track & Field Championships are in
Templemore, Co Tipperary on  Saturday and Sunday next and on both days
the hammer competition begins at 9.30 am and the main programme at 11
am. Lots of athletes from Waterford clubs will be participating and
full programme is on Munster Athletics website.On Thursday June 20 th
the new Track at the RSC will be officially opened at 4 pm and a small
number of athletic events will be organised for the event due to the
timescale between 3.30 pm and 4.30 pm..all clubs will be notified.

Clashmore 5 Miles on Friday

The 12th Annual Old Still Bar Clashmore 5 Miles.is on Friday next June
14 th This is race 6 of the Ger Wyley/Nike Sports Summer Series. The
race starts at 8 pm in the village of Clashmore. Entries will be taken
at the Old Still Bar in the village and the entry fee is 5 EURO.
Refreshments and the prize-giving will take place at the Old Still Bar
after the race.

Fenor 15 km on Sunday

The challenging 15 km course covers a novel distance (9.3 miles) and
is designed to be the perfect prep' for those doing the Waterford
Viking Marathon a fortnight later. Also, anyone training up to do a
half-marathon, as well as regular middle distance road runners, or
just those who would like to set themselves a challenge, will find the
Fenor 15 ideal.. There will be chip timing and a water stop, with
prizes for the first five males/females, and also Category awards will
be presented to the leading men/women finishers aged
over-/40/45/50/55. It starts in Fenor Village Co Waterford at 12
noon.on Sunday next June 16 th. and finishes in Fenor GAA pitch nearby
and limited entry on the day, so come early.

8 pm, Sunday June 16th Fenor GAA 15 km  12 noon. Sunday June 23 rd 12
noon 10 km Pink Rock near Glenmore on Old New Ross Road. Closing date
of  Saturday next June 15 th at 12 pm now gradually approaching for
the Waterford Viking Marathon which takes place on Saturday June 29
th. If you are not in by that date you cannot enter afterwards.
