Super season openers for Kelly & Thomas in Namur

Kelly Proper opened her season over 200m in Namur tonight with a fine win in the 200m in 23.60s. Thomas Barr recorded an excellent 50.34s for third place in his 400m hurdles. Both these performances are just a fraction off the Zurich A standards. Both will contest these events again in Oordegem on Saturday.

Three wins in Santry by Waterford athletes

In Santry Stadium on Sunday last the AAI Games the first big fixture
of the season was held and  five athletes from Ferrybank and two from
West Waterford were competing there. Ferrybank AC had two wins with
Cara Kennedy in the hammer and Niamh Whelan in the 200 metres,she was
also second in the 100 metres and Neasa Murphy was again second in the
high jump. David Mc Carthy West Waterford AC was a very comfortable
winner of the 1500 metres and his club mate James Ledingham was second
in the 800 metres, so a good day for Waterford.


County Championships conclude.

This years County Championships concluded at the RSC on Sunday last
and all of the clubs in the County were well  represented. Many
athletes won more than one title and the following had trebles at
juvenile level:.James Murphy, Michael Duggan, Grace Furlong Waterford
AC, Aoife Hamilton West Waterford, Jake Bagge and Anthony Mc Cauley
Tramore Several others from Ferrybank, Waterford, West Waterford and
Tramore had doubles and KCK and Finisk Valley also supplied winners,
full results should be with all clubs by now.

Another win for Power.

On Friday last 160 competed in the 19 th Annual An Tobar 5 miles road
race in Ardmore and Trevor Power Waterford AC kept up his recent good
form to win again in decisive fashion in a time of 25 minutes 56
seconds, Kevin Kenneally was second in 27.52 and Tom Bennett third in
28.12 both West Waterford AC. First lady home was Sinead Mansfield
West Waterford in 31.10, Sally Forristal St Joseph's Tullogher was
second in 32.31 and Kathleen Quinn Ardmore  third in 33.02. The event
was race 4 of the Ger Wyley Sports/Skins Series.

All Ireland Schools Finals

Tullamore is the venue on Saturday next for the All Ireland Secondary
Schools Track and Field Finals and many boys and girls from Waterford
schools will be competing. After their many wins at the Munster
Schools quite a few are expected to challenge for titles in three
grades Junior, Intermediate and Senior. A very long days competition
begins at 9 am with events going on until 6 pm, full time table on

19 th Annual Touraneena 5k

 On Friday next May 30 th another race in the Ger Wyley Sports/ Skins
Series  goes ahead,the Touraneena 5 Km.The race starts in the village
of Touraneena, just off the main Dungarvan to Clonmel Road at 8 p.m.
Entries will be taken at the nearby Community Centre and the race is
organised by the Touraneena Racquetball club. Many walkers also take
part in this event and a special presentation of the Ann Power
Memorial Shield will be awarded to the walker who predicts nearest to
their time how long it will take them to walk the course. The running
race is open to all runners over the age of 16 years.

AI Games May 25th

It was a good day  in Dublin at the AI games. Niamh Whelan was in super form winning the 200m in a nifty 23.91s and placing second in the 100m. Cara Kennedy had a fine win in the hammer and Neasa Murphy was second in the high jump. There was good performances also from Shane O Dwyer in the 100m, 200m and long jump and also Andrew Connick in the 800m.

County Championships Day 2 on Sunday

Starting at 11 am sharp the County Track and Field Championships
second and final section is at the RSC on Sunday next with numerous
events for juvenile, ,junior and senior athletes as well as a few
master's events. Full programme is with all clubs long ago and again
lots of help required to run off the Championships efficiently. All
athletes competing must get a number on the day before competing.
Another fixture on Sunday are the AAI games in Santry Stadium Dublin
where Waterford athletes will be competing.

National League

For the first time for years a section of the National League was held
at the RSC on Sunday last and teams from many parts of the country
competed including Ferrybank women and men's teams. For the women it
was a very good day and they should be well placed going into round 2.
They had wins by Kelly Proper long jump, Neasa Murphy high jump,
Dearbhaill Ivan walk and the 4 x 100 m relay team. Despite having two
wins in the men's through Sean Archer in the triple jump and Paul
Murphy in the 400 metres they will find it hard to progress.

Multiple successes at Munster Schools

Athletes from Waterford schools were in sparkling form at the Munster
Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships at Cork IT Track on
Saturday last  coming home with numerous gold, silver and bronze
medals. The following were the winners Senior; 100 and 200 m Niamh Mc

 An Tobar Bar Ardmore 5

Race number 4 in the Ger Wyley Sports/Skins Summer Series is in
Ardmore this Friday May 23 rd at 8 pm..This race is in its 19th year
and is sponsored by An Tobar Bar in Ardmore. There will be prizes for
men, ladies individual as well as the 12 Star Sign categories. Entries
will be taken at the Ardmore G.A.A. Club Pavilion. The entry fee is
just €5

County Championship Report


All clubs in the county were represented at the first section of the
County Track and Field Championships at the RSC on Sunday last and
several athletes won more than one title. In the juvenile grade a four
timer was had by Praise Oweye Ferrybank AC under 12 and Kiana
Fitzgerald from the same club won three under 9 events. Jack Corcoran
Waterford AC also had a treble under11 and from the same club there
were doubles by Jack Deegan under12, Luke O'Brien under 16 and Emma
O'Brien under 18.Doubles for Ferrybank AC were recorded by Jake Bagge
under 14, Hassan Ali under 15, Sinead O'Regan under 16, Ellen Boylan
KCK had two wins under 12 and Emily O'Mahony West Waterford also won
two under14.  In the senior grade Brendan Leahy  Waterford AC won both
the 100 and 400 metres. There were wins by Ciarán O'Mealoin An
Ghaeltacht/ Ard Mhor u 16  and Shane Scanlon from the newly formed
club Finnisk Valley in the senior grade.Impressive winners were Barry
Keane, Jamie Murphy and Holly Meaney Waterford AC, Orla Queally
Ferrybank, Shane Monagle and Anthony Mc Cauley Tramore and Cormac
O'Mahony West Waterford, The final section is on May 25 th and last
weeks results are with all clubs by now.

Ferrybank GAA 10 KM

170 took part in the Ferrybank GAA 10 km on Sunday last and these were

Munster Schools Finals

Saturday next the Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field finals are
at Cork IT Track with a 9.30 am start and lots of Waterford athletes
will be competing. It will be a very long day of competition.The full

National League

The first round of the National Senior League will be held at three
venues including the RSC in the city on Sunday next. Ferrybank AC have
a strong women's team competing at the RSC in the Premier Division and
a men's team in Division One.

Winners in the Munster Championship fixture at the RSC on Bank Holiday
Monday May 5 th were as follows Under 23; Cara Kennedy hammer, Sean

Furlong 3rd u 18. For Ferrybank Praise Oweye won under 12 with Rachel
Walsh 3rd and Sinead O'Regan was second u 16.and Tom Gallagher 3 rd u
14.

East Munster Schools

Athletes from Waterford schools captured the major share of the titles
at the East Munster Secondary Schools Championships in Templemore on
Wednesday May 7 th. Doubles were recorded by the following.Senior;
Patrick Crowther St Augustine's hammer and shot putt. Intermediate
Patrick O'Neill Abbey C.C. 200 and 400 metres, Barry Keane St Declan's
Kilmacthomas 800 and 1500 m and minor Lance Baylan DLS 100 m and long

Joe Honoured.

 World Masters 800 metres champion Joe Gough was accorded  a Mayoral
Reception in City Hall by Mayor John Cummins on Mayb 6th. Joe was
joined by his wife and members of his family and by many athletes and
officials from 8 athletic clubs in Waterford,Kilkenny,Wexford and
Tipperary,Waterford Sports, Partnership and representatives from other
sports also.The Mayor spoke of Joe's outstanding career in Master's
athletics in various age groups which saw him win 69 Irish
titles,several, British titles,a Russian title, European titles two
world silver medals and the his crowning glory the World 800 metres
last month as well as setting a World record in his age group in
February and said his magnificent achievements were very much
appreciated by Waterfordians. Joe thanked the Mayor for the reception
and paid tribute to his family,his coach for thirty years Dick Murphy
and the many athletes he trains with, Joe trains 6 days a week mainly
at the RSC


Officials Course

 The Officials Course will go ahead Friday next May 16 th at 6.30 pm
in the Tower Hotel. The course will be given by John Cronin.To help
cover the cost of providing the course, an entry fee of €5 will apply.
Tea/Coffee will also be served on the night.
