Five winners at  National Juvenile Championships

Last week end it was the turn of our juveniles to show their paces at
the GloHealth National Championships in Tullamore and over Saturday
and Sunday they won five titles with four for Ferrybank and one for
Waterford.The Ferrybank winners were Paul Murphy 400 metres u 19,
Aisling Quinn 3000 metres u 17, Tom Gallagher high jump u 14 and Neasa
Murphy u 18 high jump..silver medals were won by Órlaith O'Brien u 16
shot putt, James Bagge u 14 1500 metres,Praise Oweye u 12 long jump
and Kylie Heinen u 13 high jump and a bronze medal was won by Siobhan
Whelan in the under 19 triple jump.Waterford AC had their win with
James Murphy in the under 15 triple jump and he also collected a
silver in the high jump, Cathal Scanlon also won a silver in the u 13
javelin and bronze medals went to Shane Cawley and Sarah Jacob both in
the under 13 grade in the shot putt,Órla O'Connor u 15 walk and Emma
Caulfield u 14 walk. Both clubs had athletes with near misses
finishing fourth in their events.

No joy for Niamh

At the World Junior Athletic Championships in Eugene Oregan last week
Niamh Mc Nicol Ferrybank AC finished 6 th in her heat of the 200
metres in 25.38
seconds well outside her best time of 24.33 and didn't progress to the
semi final, the race was won in 24.20 seconds, Niamh is eligible to
compete in two years time at these championships

Ballymacarbry Five Miles

165 competed in the 19 th Annual Doocey's Bar 5 miles road race in
Ballymacarbry on Friday last and the convincing winner was Kevin
Maunsell Clonmel in 25 minutes 55 seconds, Philip Harty West Waterford
was second in 26.11 and Trevor Power Waterford AC  third in 26.55.
First lady home was Órna Murray Ferrybank in 30.22, Angela Mc Cann
Clonmel was second in 31.16 and Sinéad Mansfield West Waterford third
in 32.20. The category winners were Men; o 40 Alan Ryan West
Waterford,o 45 Jim Baldwin Waterford, o 50 Ray Hahessy West Waterford,
o 55 Tommy Cahill Clonmel junior Phil Hunter Sligo. Women o 35 Mary
Molloy ( Ind ), o 40 Brigid Coffey West Waterford o 45 Ann Dunford
do,o 50 Una Uí Mhuirrithe ( Ind ) junior Ciara Burke West Waterford,
the event was part of the Ger Wyley Sports/Skins series.

Piltown 10 Km

The Outfield Sports Three County Challenge 5 race Series concludes on
Friday next August 1st with the Morris Oil Piltown 10 Km  road race in
Piltown Co Kilkenny which starts at 7.30 pm Entries will be taken from
6.00 pm at Piltown GAA Club.

Correction

In the report last week on the National  Senior Championships in
Santry Sean Archer Ferrybank was listed as being fourth in the triple
jump but he was in fact third just as in 2013 and 2012. Sean had his
best result of the series in the final effort with 13.73 metres to
take the bronze medal.-mea culpa.

National Juveniles day 3

It was another great day at the national juvenile championships day 3. Neasa Murphy won gold in the u 18 high jump, Orlaith O Brien was second in the u 16 shot with a new pb, Jake Bagge had a super run for the silver medal in the u 14 1500m and Siobhan Whelan was third in the u 19 triple jump. Ann Corcoran was fourth in the u 16 shot missing a medal by just a few cm. Stephen Walsh was sixth in his 200m final. Eoin Browne was just outside his pb in the 1500m. Unfortunately Paul Murphy was disqualified after a false start in the 200m. Well done everyone.

National Juveniles Day 2

What a super day in Tullamore! National titles for Tom Gallagher in the u 14 high jump, Aisling Quinn in the u 18 3k which wS a marvellous comeback after a long injury layoff and gold also for Paul Murphy in the u 19 400m by a huge distance. There was silver for Praise Owoeye in the u 12 long jump and she was just pipped for gold on the last jump of the competition and a fabulous silver with a new pb of 1.45 for Kylie Heinan in the u 13 high jump. Siobhán Whelan was just beaten for bronze on the final jump in the u 19 long jump and finished fourth with 5.14m. Also fourth was Jake Bagge in the u 14 800 again very close to third. Top eight placings also for Eoin Browne in a brilliant new 3k pb , Sean Whittle in the triple jump, Orlaith o Brien in the discus and Sinead O'regan in the long jump. Well done to everyone and roll on tomorrow!

Niamh 6th in the World Junior's 200m heat

Well done to Niamh McNicol who has finished in sixth position in her heat of the 200m in Oregon. She won't progress to the semi final but she will have gained massive experience by performing on this global stage. Niamh will be still underage in two years time for the next world juniors!

Four National titles won and Kelly on the double

Keeping up the marvellous record that Waterford athletes have at the
National Senior Track and Field Championships  our athletes came back
from Santry Stadium last week end with four gold medals as well as a
silver and bronze. Once again Kelly Proper Ferrybank AC was the
Waterford star as she brought home two gold  and one bronze retaining
two of the three titles she won in 2013. On Saturday she first of all
won the long jump title with a jump of 6.27 metres and this victory
brought her tally of long jump titles to eight in the last nine years.
A short time later she won her semi final of the 200 metres in 24.06
and later on in winning the final clocked 23.22 her second fastest
time ever for her second win of the day again retaining her crown,
making it three in all she also won the 200 metres in 2009. Then on
Sunday this athlete who thrives on competition defended her 100 metres
title and won her semi final in 11.62. In the final she eventually
finished third in 11.62 seconds behind dead heaters the three times
champion Amy Foster of Lisburn and Phil Healy Bandon  timed at 11.49
Another Ferrybank AC athlete also collected a gold medal on Saturday
making it four titles in a row Cara Kennedy impressively won the
hammer with a throw of 56.82 metres  over three metres in front of the
second athlete and very close to her best she is a most consistent
performer

Thomas Barr's four in a row.

Sunday proved to be a mixed day for brother and sister Thomas and
Jessie Barr both expected to give it a big shot to win 400 metres
hurdle titles for four successive years.Thomas duly obliged with yet
another powerful run and faultless display of hurdling to score an
easy victory in 50.04.Despite being checked in for her race Jessie did
not appear on the start line and it transpired that she arrived in at
a late stage for her race due to being caught in very heavy traffic on
the outskirts of Dublin and withdrew  due to insufficient time to warm
up. Again on Sunday Thomas Houlihan West Waterford  had a fine pole
vault competition eventually finishing second with a personal best of
4.70 metres the same height as the winner who took the title on the
count back with fewer faults The 1500 metres was a very important race
for David Mc Carthy West Waterford as besides himself three others in
the field had qualifying times for the European Championships but only
three will go and Sunday's winner was an automatic choice. In the end
David finished 4 th in 3.45.64 behind  Ciarán O'Lionárd who won in
3.43.85 in a tactical race so David has to wait and see if he makes
it.  James Ledingham another West Waterford athlete won his heat of
the 800 metres on Saturday and put up a fine performance in the final
on Sunday finishing just outside the medals in 4 th place in 1.50.73 a
foot behind the third athlete home, Others to do well were Lisa
Houlihan do 4 th in pole vault and Sean Archer Ferrybank again 4 th in
the triple jump and Paul Murphy again Ferrybank was 6 th in the 400
metres final in 48.40 this was his first major final and Niamh Whelan
made it through to the 100 metres final but withdrew due to injury,
she also got to the 200 metres final and finished 5 th in 24.37.In the
junior 3000 metres Eoin Browne Ferrybank was 6th.

Schools International

Three athletes from Waterford Schools were on the Irish team for the
Schools International in Cardiff on Saturday and all fared very well.
Orlaith O'Brien Ursuline set a personal best in finishing second in
the javelin with 45.16 metres, Jurig Kanass St Augustine's  finished
second in the Pole Vault with 4.03 metres and Megan Dunford do was 6
th in the pole vault with a personal best of 2.85 metres.


Alan Everett Memorial Road Race

Over 200 competed in the 7 th Annual Alan Everett Memorial Road Race
over 5 miles   in Woodstown on Friday last and Shane Quinn Ferrybank
AC was the very impressive winner in a fast time of 24 minutes 56
seconds, Kevin Dooney  Raheny Shamrocks was second in 25.16 and Niall
Sheil St Killian's Wexford was third in 26.51. Emily Sissons
Providence College USA girl friend of Shane Quinn also came up with a
very fast winning time of 27.17, Jacqui Carthy Kilmore was second in
29.59 and Órna Murray Ferrybank third in 30.04. Category winners; Men
M40 Mark Weir Nth Down, M45 Jim Baldwin Waterford, M50 Bill Egan ( Ind
), M 55 Dermot Power Waterford, M60 Con Kelleher do , M70 Tony O'Brien
do, Women M35 Joan Mahony Waterford, M40 Eilish Coady  ( Ind ) M45
Sharon Flynn Waterford, M50 Una Ui Mhuirrthe ( Ind ), M60 Terri Gough
West Waterford AC. junior Aisling Quinn Ferrybank,among those running
was Rally driver Craig Breen. The late Alan's wife Annette and her
daughters as well as his brothers and sister were present and the race
was started by his sister Norma Kenneally and his brother Pat spoke on
behalf of the family thanking all involved. Waterford Athletic Club
organised the event and Trevor Walsh Chairperson thanked all who
supported the event and the sponsors. As usual the ladies had lots of
refreshments ready for all competitors in"The Saratoga" after the race
The Waterford County Championship was incorporated in the event and
the two winners were Shane Quinn and Órna Murray.

All Ireland Juvenile

The final two days of the All Ireland Juvenile Track and Field
championships are in Tullamore on Saturday and Sunday next July 26 th
and 27 th and many athletes from Waterford clubs will compete. Two
very long days of competitions lie ahead with Saturdays programme
beginning at 10.30 am and Sunday's at 10 am and full timetable on
Athletic Ireland website.

Ballymacarbry 5 Miles

Another race in the Ger Wyley Sports/ Skins Series takes place this
Friday July 25 th at 8 pm in Ballymacarbry Co Waterford its the 19 th
Annual Doocey's Bar 5 miles. Entries from 6.45 pm in Community Hall in
Ballymacarbry which is on the Clonmel /Dungarvan Road . On Sunday
there is a 10 miles in Ballynonty Co Tipperary at 11 am

 Late Jack Lalor

The death occurred last week of John ( Jack ) Lalor  from Carrick on
Suir who won NACA  All Ireland senior titles in the 100 yds in three
successive years 1958,1959 and 1960, he also won the 60 yds in 1958
and 1960 collected silver medals in the 60 and 100 yds in 1961 and
silver medals in the 220 yds in 1959,1960 and 1961 and a bronze in
1958. Many Waterford athletes still around from that era including
yours truly would have competed at all the meetings Jack competed in
and one or two would have run against him and all were great friends
of his  For a sprinter his athletic life started quite late but he
still was one of the best possessing a devastating start and had a
great spring in his step  Sympathy is extended to his wife and family
from all his

National Senior Championships

Fantastic results at the National Seniors ...Kelly Proper added another two titles to her collection winning the long jump with a fine leap of 6.27m and the 200m in a stunning 23.22s. She took bronze in the 100m also. Thomas Barr was a class apart in the 400m hurdles with an easy 50.04s. Cara Kennedy won her fourth hammer title with a fine throw of 57m. Sean Archer snatched a bronze medal on his last jump in the triple jump just under his pb. Paul Murphy ran a super heat and final moving up to the senior ranks and finished sixth in the final. Eoin Browne had a super run for sixth in the junior 3k and Neasa Murphy was also sixth in the high jump. Richard Lucas just missed the final in the 800m. Well done everyone.

Big scalp for Thomas and qualification for Kelly

At two separate meetings on Friday last in Dublin and Rhede in Germany
two athletes from Ferrybank AC had outstanding results. At the Morton
International Games in Santry in Dublin  Thomas Barr continued his
excellent season with a sparkling winning display in the 400 metres
hurdles in 48.94 seconds finishing very strongly to easily beating the
reigning World Champion Jahue Gordon Trinidad and Tobago into second
place timed at 49.48, Mahue Suguimati Brazil was third in 49.94.
Assuming Thomas can hold his present form he is a medal prospect at
the European Championships in Zurich next month. In Rhede in Germany
Kelly Proper won a 200 metres race in 23.16 seconds a personal best
and the second fastest time ever by an Irish woman but more important
well inside the A qualifying standard for the European Championships
of 23.35. Kelly realised her big 2014 ambition and her coach Brid
Golden helped her on the road to achieving her goal seeking out
suitable races for Kelly around Europe. Kelly is deserving of being on
the major stage in Zurich,she is and always has been a very
competitive athlete. Also in Santry James Ledingham West Waterford was
second in the 800 metres A race in a very good time of 1 minute 50.36
seconds but David Mc Carthy disappointed in the Morton Mile where ten
athletes were below 4 minutes.


National Senior Championships

The big event of the Irish athletic season goes ahead this coming
Saturday and Sunday in Morton Stadium Dublin. Its the GloHealth All
Ireland senior track and field championships with Ireland's leading
athletes competing and with a big Waterford interest. Four Ferrybank
AC athletes will defend titles won last year Kelly Proper  200
metres,long jump, (she may not defend the 100 m also won last year
)Thomas Barr 400 metres hurdles his sister Jessie the same event and
Cara Kennedy hammer, others entered are Niamh Whelan 100 and 200 m,
Paul Murphy 400 m, Sean Archer triple jump, Niall Tuohy and Richard
Lucas 800 m, Neasa Murphy high jump, ,Andrew Connick 10000 m, Pat Ryan
hammer,Ben Kiely 400 m hurdles and Eooin Browne junior 3000 m. and
ladies relay teams may also compete.West Waterford AC  have 5 athletes
entered brother and sister Lisa and Thomas Houlihan compete in the
Pole Vault,.David Mc Carthy is entered in the 800 and 1.500 meters,
James Ledingham will run the 800 meters and Sean Curran  the Junior
3.000 meters and Kevin Fitzgerald Waterford AC is in the javelin..

Cork City Sports

 Star studded fields were the order at the Cork City Sports on Tuesday
July 8 th with several major medal winners among those competing.
Athletes from Ferrybank AC in action had quite good results. In a
field which  included Javier Curson Peurto Rico the third fastest
athlete in the world this year so far in the 400 metres hurdles and
the winner on the evening in 48.41 seconds Thomas Barr finished third
in 49.91 seconds a second outside his best.another highly rated
athlete Johnny Dutch USA was second in 49.27. Kelly Proper finished a
close second in the long  jump with 6.20 metres ,the winner Stuart
Bianca Bahamas won it with6.22 metres, Niamh Whelan was third in the
100 metres in 11.68 seconds and Paul Murphy won the (B ) 400 metres in
48.56 seconds.


World Junior

From today Tuesday July 22 nd until Sunday next July 27 th the World
Junior Athletic Championships are in  Eugene,Oregon USA and a team of
nine Irish athletes will compete and the team includes Niamh McNicol
Ferrybank in the 200 metres.The heats of this event are on Thursday
morning, the semi final Thursday afternoon and final on Friday.

Schools International

Cardiff is the venue on Saturday next for the Schools International
track and field meeting and three athletes from two schools in
Waterford are on the Irish team. Órlaith O'Brien Ursuline Convent
competes in the javelin and two from St Augustine's College Megan
Dunford and Jurig Kanass  both are in the pole vault

Four National juvenile wins

A number of athletes from Waterford AC ,Ferrybank AC and West
Waterford Ac competed at the National Juvenile Championships in
Tullamore  last Sunday and four titles were won. Waterford AC had a
very good day with wins by James Murphy in the under 15 long jump with
5.55 metres,Victory Eddy in the u 12 60 metres,Evan Hayes was second
in the u 12 long jump and fourth placings went to Luke O'Brien u 16
javelin and Lance Baylon u 15 100 metres. Ferrybank AC had two wins
and Orlaith O'Brien was a class apart in winning the u 16 javelin with
a championship best performance of 41.56 metres while World junior
bound Niamh Mc Nicol won the u18 100 metres in 12.12 seconds Fourth
placings went to Stephen Walsh u 18 100 m and triple jump and Praise
Oweye u 12 shot putt.. Aoife Hamilton West Waterford was second in the
u 17 2000 metres steeplechase

Rathgormack 5 miles Result

Race 4 of the Outfield Sports Three County Challenge the Auto Power
Rathgormack 5 miles was held on Friday evening last and William
Mansell Clonmel easily won it with Noel Murphy Waterford AC second and
Sally Forristal St Joseph's was first lady home.

Woodstown Five Miles on Friday

The Annual Alan Everett Memorial 5 miles road race is in Woodstown Co
Waterford this Friday July 18 th and in incorporates the Waterford
County Championship.  It  starts at 7 pm sharp,with walkers leaving at
6.45 pm.This year there's a time bonus of 250 euros if the winner
finishes under 25 mins and 100 euros for the 1 st female under 27.30
mins all the prize giving and refreshments will be in "The
Saratoga".online entries are now being  taken at www.waterfordac.com
for 10 euros or will be 15 euros on the night from 5.30 pm till 6.45
pm in "The Saratoga" Proceeds going to  Dunmore East branch of the
Irish Coast Guard. Lots of sponsored prizes and will be loads of spot
prizes on the night. Race starts approximately 1000 metres from "The
Saratoga" on the Dunmore East side of Woodstown. On Friday July 25 th
the Ballymacarbry 5 miles is at 8 pm. Ger Wyley Series.

The final two days of the All Ireland juvenile track and field
championships are in Tullamore on Saturday and Sunday July 26 th and
27 th

Thomas Barr beats the world champion in Santry!

Thomas Barr  has beaten reigning World 400m Hurdles Champion Jehue Gordon of Trinidad at Morton Games, Santry tonight setting a new  stadium record of 48.94. Gordon crossed the line in 49.48 with Mahau Suguimati  of Brazil third in 49.94.

Kelly runs European Qualifier in 200m

Well done to Kelly Proper who smashed her pb in the 200m in Rhede in Germany on Friday running 23.16s a time which moves her to second on the Irish All Time list. This time is well under the all important 23.35 european qualifying standard.  Well done Kelly

National Junior & u 23 Championships

Belated congratulations to the following medal winners from last weekend's National Junior and Under 23 Championships:
Gold medals for Cara Kennedy in the Hammer, Paul Murphy in the 400m, and Sean Archer in the Triple Jump. Silver for Sean Whittle in the Triple Jump, and Bronze for Neasa Murphy in the High Jump and Patrick Ryan in the Hammer.

Belated congrats also to Neasa Murphy who set a new Munster U18 High Jump record when she jumped 1.71 at the Munster Championships recently. The previous record had been held by our very own Brid Golden, since 1986!!

Kelly runs fast 200 metres in Belgium

Kelly Proper had a personal best in winning a 200 metres race in 23.37
seconds in Oordegem in Belgium on Saturday last very close to the
23.35 standard for the European Championships she was also 5 th in the
long jump with 5.98 metres At the same meeting in a pre program 200
metres race Niamh Whelan won in 24.06 seconds and Niamh Mc Nicol was 5
th in 24.33 again a B qualifying time for the World junior
championships and a personal best, Whelan also ran in a graded 200
metres race later and finished 5 th in 24.12. Then on Sunday in
Brussels in desperate conditions which saw several athletes refuse to
compete Kelly won the 200 metres in 23.48 with Niamh second in 24.12,
earlier Kelly won a graded long jump with 6.32 metres and Niamh was
second in a 100 metres in 11.88.

Niamh Mc Nicol on Irish World Junior Team

Ferrybank AC will have a representative on the Irish team for theWorld
Junior Championships in  Eugene Oregan USA from July 22 nd to 27th.
Niamh Mc Nicol has been selected in the 200 metres as a  result
ofreaching the B standard twice in recent weeks.Last year she was on
theIrish Relay team that won the European Youth Olympics  4 x100
metres relay. She started her career with Tramore AC when very young
and joined Ferrybank two years ago.

Belfast Results

 Jessie Barr Ferrybank finished second in the 400 metres hurdles in
Belfast on Wednesday last in 58.45 seconds a season's best, Paul
Murphy also from Ferrybank seeking a qualifying time for the World
Juniors of 47.70  in the 400 metres came agonisingly close to it
finishing third in 47.75. David Mc Carthy West Waterford was 6 th in
the 1500 metres in 3.42.7, James Ledingham his club mate was 8 th in
the 800 metres in 1.51.38 and Niall Tuohy Ferrybank 10 th in 1.52.33

Seven Irish titles won in Cork by Waterford athletes

At the GloHealth All Ireland Junior and under 23 Championships in Cork
athletes from Ferrybank and West Waterford AC between them won 7
titles. For West Waterford there was a clean sweep in the pole vault
competitions with their four athletes. There were  victories by Thomas
Houlihan and his sister Lisa both under 23 and Meg O'Connor and Yuri
Kanas both junior For Ferrybank AC under 23 titles were won by Cara
Kennedy in the hammer and Sean Archer in triple jump and Paul Murphy
in the junior 400 metres but without making the World Junior
Standard,conditions in Cork were very blustery he was timed at 48.16
seconds. Ferrybank also had bronze medal wins by Sean Whittle triple
jump, Patrick Ryan hammer and Neasa Murphy high jump all junior
.
National Juvenile Relays placings for Waterford AC

Waterford AC came home with two thirds from the National Juvenile
Relays in Tullamore on Saturday last with their boys under 12 and
under 15 teams. The under 12 squad was Victory Eddy, Jack Deegan, Evan
Hayes and  Jack Corcoran and the under 15 group were Lance Baylon,
James Murphy, Hugo Blair, Favour Eddy

Rás Na Rinne Details

130 competed in the 22 nd Annual Rás na Rinne in Ring over 6 miles on
Friday last race 8 of the Ger Wyley Sports /Skins series.The overall
winner was Brian Murphy Carrick on Suir in 32 minutes 31 seconds,
Ravis Zakis West Waterford was second in 33.01 and Frank Hayes East
Cork  third in 33.36. The first lady home was Martina O'Dwyer Carrick
on Suir in 36.24, Niamh O'Donovan was second in 41.30 and Sandra
Prendergast  third in 43.59 both West Waterford. Category winners were
as follows; Men o 40 Peter Duggan St Joseph's, o 45 Jim Baldwin
Waterford, o 50 Denis Kelleher ( Ind ) o 55 Joe Gough West Waterford,
Junior Liam Reilly do. Women o 35 Mary Dyer West Waterford, o 40
Brigid Coffey do, o 45 Ann Dunford do and o 50 Bernie Prendergast do.

Shannon Airport Runway Run

Rory Moloney West Waterford AC won the Shannon Airport Runway Night 5
km run on Friday night last in 15 minutes and 1 second well clear of
the second athlete home Over 1000 competed in this unusual event.

Another big week ahead

This evening Tuesday July 8 th the Cork City International Sports is
at Cork IT track and a number of athletes from Waterford will be

including Thomas Barr. Sunday next July 13 th is Day 2  of the All
Ireland Juvenile Track and Field championships under 14 to 19 in

Fridays Road Race

Another race in the Outfield Sports Three County Challenge Series is
in Rathgormack on Friday next July 11 th over 5 miles starting at 7.30
pm and entries from 6.15 pm in Rathgormack

All Ireland Juvenile

 Two All Ireland Juvenile Championships are on this week end in
Tullamore. On Saturday AAI Juvenile Development Games 10.30 am and
Sunday All Ireland Juvenile u 14 to 19 Championships 10 am with a big

Saturday 19 th Schools International Cardiff with 3 Waterford athletes
involved, Saturday and Sunday 19 th and 20 th All Ireland Senior
Championships Morton Stadium Santry, Dublin. Saturday 26 th All
Ireland Juvenile Day 3 Tullamore World Junior Championships are in
Eugene,Oregan  USA starting on 22 nd.
